Texas basketball guard Tre Johnson has excelled during the 2024-25 season, making a significant impact during his freshman season.
His tremendous play has put him among some of the best freshmen in the nation and has widespread attention.
The standout freshman was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year and earned All-conference second-team honors.
Johnson would become the first Longhorn to win Freshman of the Year honors since Lakers Big Jaxson Hayes won the award when Texas was still in the Big 12. He's also the tenth player in school history to receive the prestigious honor, joining a list of other Longhorn greats like Tristan Thompson and Kevin Durant.
Johnson thrived during what might be his only season with the program, averaging 20.2 points per game,2.8 assists and 3.2 rebounds while shooting 39.5% from behind the arch and 80% from the free throw line in 29 games.
He won the SEC regular season scoring title, beating out Alabama guard Mark Sears, who averaged 19.2 points. His superb play has also earned him five SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
He also delivered some iconic performances as a Longhorn, including a standout 39-point game against Auburn back in February. Now, he will look to continue his excellent play when his Longhorns take on No. 12 Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament on Wednesday.
With the Longhorns finishing the regular season 17-14, it's unlikely that Texas will clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament, however, Johnson gave Texas fans a season to remember, and he's firmly etched his name in program history.
