For all the grief Michigan State Head Basketball coach Tom Izzo gets, especially with his feelings about the current era of college basketball, he does a good job of getting work done.

For the second time this offseason, Coach Izzo has evaluated and found a player who fits the Michigan State mold, at a position of most need. The cupboard was bare for the Spartans at the shooting guard spot, with Jase Richardson declared for the 2025 NBA Draft, and Tre Holloman off to NC State, not to mention Jaden Akins' graduation.

Coach Izzo's done it again, as the Spartans landed Samford transfer Trey Fort.

Fort is a six-foot-four senior guard who averaged 14.6 points, four rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game this past season. His three-point shooting was strong as well at 38 percent. Trey made his commitment known via On3 Sports. His decision didn't come as much of a surprise, given he had been in East Lansing on a visit this week.

Sure, it's been an unconventional path for Fort, so far in his career, with plenty of stops along the way, but Fort is more than ready for the Big Time with the Spartans.

It seems to be the trend this offseason for Izzo to find guys in the portal that Michigan State faced this past season, as Fort visited MSU during the season when the Bulldogs came to the Breslin Center in the non-conference. That was the same case for Kaleb Glenn, who transferred in from Florida Atlantic

Both players are going to have a major role on the 2025-26 Michigan State Basketball team.

So you can't say Coach Izzo hasn't been doing work, despite plenty of outside noise. These moves are coming at a quieter rate. That might be the best route for Coach Izzo. That way, they come as more of a surprise to Spartan Nation.

The Spartans have gotten a wing and a shooting guard who can score. Now, if they can find a good backup point guard with experience, to give Jeremy Fears Jr a breather now and then, this team could easily be back in contention in the Big Ten next season.
