Madison, WI - As the Final Four was set yesterday, the college basketball transfer portal continued to whirl. Wisconsin basketball has not been immune to the activity, having a veteran guard enter to seek another landing spot last week.
Today, the Badgers again saw one of their guards enter the portal. This time, it was not a veteran guard but a young one. Despite promise from the heralded recruit, he could not crack the rotation this past season in Madison.
UW head coach Greg Gard will need to fill another spot in his 2025-26 roster with the departure, in addition to losing six seniors.
According to a report by League Ready, Daniel Freitag is entering the transfer portal with three seasons of eligibility remaining.
A four-star recruit in the 247Sports Composite, Freitag joined Wisconsin as its highest-ranked point guard prospect in program history. As the 11th-ranked point guard and second-ranked prospect in Minnesota, the Minneapolis native came to Madison with lofty expectations.
If met, those expectations will come to fruition elsewhere. In his freshman season, Freitag appeared in 14 games for the Badgers. The 6-foot-2 guard recorded a season-high five minutes against the Chicago State Cougars and his only points with a two-point basket against the Iowa Hawkeyes in January. In total, Freitag shot 1-11 in his appearances.
As a recruit, the Breck School product chose Wisconsin over other high-major offers, including the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Virginia Cavaliers, and Iowa Hawkeyes and others.
With Freitag and Camren Hunter in the portal, Gard must fill out his backcourt depth. As Max Klesmit and John Tonje have exhausted their eligibility, the Badgers have a combined 58.7 minutes per game to fill. Jack Janicki, who entered into the rotation as a walk-on this season, will likely see his 11.4 minutes per game increase, but a portal addition at guard seems inevitable now for Wisconsin basketball.
