I previously discussed the Davey O’Brien Award and its significance for college quarterbacks, as well as the selection process and stages of voting. After weeks of thorough analysis and vetting, we have reached the finalists stage. These three players have excelled both on the field and in the classroom, setting the standard for next year’s selection process. The respective conferences represented are the Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC.

Meet the Finalists

This year’s finalists have distinguished themselves through exceptional performance and leadership, embodying the true legacy of this award.

Cam Ward, Miami Hurricanes | ACC

Cam Ward has been the heartbeat of the Hurricane offense this season. Coming from Washington State critics questioned whether Ward would be the answer for Miami, but he let his play do the talking. Ward showcased his strong arm and ability to improvise in any situation. He has amassed 3,774 yards, 34 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, leading the country with a QBR of 87.2. He’s also rushed for four touchdowns, highlighting his ability to produce when called upon. The Hurricanes currently sit at No. 6 in the most recent AP Top 25 rankings.

Shedeur Sanders, Colorado Buffaloes | Big 12

Shedeur Sanders has blazed his own path despite the weight of being the son of head coach Deion Sanders. He’s remained level-headed and focused, letting his performance speak for itself. The Sanders family previously held tenure at Jackson State. His talent is undeniable no matter how you view it. In my opinion, he’s the purest passer in this year’s draft class, and his numbers back that up. What truly stands out is his precision passing and poise. Sanders has amassed 3,488 yards, 30 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, while also rushing for four touchdowns this season. Colorado is currently ranked No. 25 in the AP Top 25 rankings.

Dillon Gabriel, Oregon Ducks | Big Ten

Dillon Gabriel currently leads the No. 1 team in the country, as reflected in the AP Top 25 rankings. Throughout his career he has been consistently effective in any offense he’s played in. Before transferring to Oregon, he was the starting quarterback at Oklahoma and excelled in that role. Gabriel dissects defenses like a surgeon, showcasing precision and composure. His leadership and explosive plays have been integral to the team’s success.

In my opinion, Gabriel is the complete package at quarterback. He can make the tough throws, break down defenses with his mobility, and rise to the occasion in big moments. He doesn’t shy away from throws others might avoid, reflecting his confidence not only in himself but also in his teammates. His commitment to team culture is evident—he plays for the team, not himself, and it shows in the way his teammates respond to him.

This season, Gabriel has amassed 3,066 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He has also rushed for six scores, further highlighting his versatility and playmaking ability. Gabriel also goes into postseason play as the all-time leader in total touchdowns with 179, a record once thought to be untouchable.

Final remarks:

The Davey O’Brien Award is more than a recognition of athletic excellence—it’s a celebration of leadership, character, and impact. Ultimately, the winner worthy of this honor is someone who consistently uplifts their teammates, inspires the next generation of signal callers, and leaves a lasting legacy. As we celebrate these quarterbacks, it’s important to acknowledge their commitment to the values this award holds dear.
