BYU entered Year 2 in the Big 12 as a relative mystery after going 5-7 in 2023, and head coach Kalani Sitake was feeling the pressure.
The Cougars ended up having a terrific season, finishing the year with an 11-2 record and a blowout victory over Colorado in the Alamo Bowl. After finishing tied for first place in the Big 12 standings, but missing the game due to tiebreakers, BYU is hoping to get their shot at the crown in 2025.
Here’s a look at what stands in their way.

BYU’s schedule gives them a chance to start the year out strong and build a lot of momentum through the first seven weeks of the year, but they’d better have everything ironed out by the time the Holy War rolls around in mid-October.
The stretch that will define BYU’s season starts on October 18 against Utah, followed by road trips to Iowa State (Oct. 25) and Texas Tech (Nov. 8), and then a home game against TCU in Week 12. The trips to Ames and Lubbock are separated with a bye week, but it’s still a pretty brutal run of opponents.
If the Cougars can navigate that four-game gauntlet without too many pitfalls, they should be in a great spot to compete for a Big 12 title in 2025.
