Former Texas Wide Receiver Visiting UW

With a clear need to add an experienced wide receiver with multiple years of eligibility left the Washington football program is hosting ex-Texas Longhorns receiver Johntay Cook II for an official visit on Thursday.

The 6-foot, 186-pound Desoto, Tex., native left the UT program in November after the two parties mutually agreed to part ways before the end of the 2024 regular season after spending two seasons playing for Steve Sarkisian in Austin.

Cook, a former five-star recruit out of the Lone Star State in the 2023 class by 247Sports' Composite rankings, hauled in 16 catches for 272 yards and 2 touchdowns over 20 games for UT prior to his departure on Nov. 7.

Although the one-time No. 3 ranked WR coming out of high school has the talent to thrive at the Power 4 level, reports out of Austin by Anwar Richardson indicated the sophomore had a falling out with the Longhorns' coaching staff, in particular his position coach Chris Jackson, that led to his exit from the program this season.

While Cook could grow and emerge better on and off the field as a result of how his first college experience went, the potential is there for a high-risk, high-reward situation developing if the Texas native chooses to transfer to UW.

With seniors Giles Jackson and Jeremiah Hunter out of eligibility after the Sun Bowl there is a clear need for coach Jedd Fisch and WR coach Kevin Cummings to add at least one player to the room before the start of spring camp, given that multiple 2025 signees at the position are expected to enroll prior to the spring including Raiden Vines-Bright and Marcus Harris.
