Colorado's versatile wide receiver and cornerback Travis Hunter is the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, but it was far from a blowout win.
Ralph D. Russo of The Athletic got his hands on the final tabulation of the 2024 Heisman Memorial Trophy Award balloting, and is was a close one to say the least. Hunter claimed 2,231 points - edging out Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty's 2,017 total points. But the first place balloting is where the difference was really made.
Hunter claimed 552 of the 928 first-place Heisman Trophy ballots while Jeanty received 309. Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel had the third-most with 24, followed by Miami quarterback Cam Ward with six. No other player received more than three.
With 2,231 out of over 5,000 possible points, Hunter's win is actually one of the most narrow in history.

With Ward such a distant fourth behind Hunter, Jeanty and Gabriel it almost makes you wonder why he was invited to the ceremony at all. He had less than half of Gabriel's final points tally and only 59 more points than Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo, who wasn't invited at all.
Some of the all-time greats of college football only narrowly eked out a Heisman Trophy win such as Paul Hornung, Eric Crouch and Billy Sims. Though this one might be among the most contentious ever.
Ultimately, the race came down to two incredibly unique athletes giving it their all on a weekly basis. For Jeanty, it was running the ball at such a pace that he now stands a mere 140 yards away from becoming the all-time single-season rushing record holder - and possibly even a national championship contender in the College Football Playoff.
For Hunter, it was being a uniquely excellent player at not one, but two vital positions - wide receiver and cornerback.
The only thing that makes this situation sad is the fact that they couldn't both win the Heisman this year. In almost any other year, either one of them might have won in a landslide.
