Head coach Sherrone Moore and the Michigan Wolverines face a major question at quarterback after struggling at the position last season.
After the departure of JJ McCarthy to the NFL following a national championship season, Moore and Co. started three different quarterbacks in 2024. And the offense ultimately finished 113th in scoring and 131st in passing.
The Wolverines still found some success with a powerful run game and stingy defense, closing out the season with key wins over national champion Ohio State and Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl.
Headed into the 2025 season, it's intriguing to think about how Michigan could fair with a complete quarterback. The Wolverines may have found the answer in former five-star Bryce Underwood.
Underwood is the biggest recruiting win for Moore thus far. Michigan flipped the Detroit native from LSU, seemingly giving the program the next potential star at the position.
According to On3's Pete Nakos on Friday, Underwood has looked the part in spring practice while Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene and former starter Davis Warren (ACL) are sidelined. Former four-star Jadyn Davis is the only other passer participating at this time.
“He’s going to be the guy,” a source said via On3 this week.
Underwood (6-foot-4, 208 pounds) signed with the Wolverines as the No. 1 player in the country in the 2025 class. He completed 71.8% of his passes for 2,509 yards with 32 touchdowns to and six interceptions as a senior at Belleville High School.
While Michigan would rather have the entire quarterback room healthy this spring, the situation could be a beneficial one for Underwood, who is receiving more reps with Keene and Warren out.
Michigan fans will get a chance to see Underwood perform during the Wolverines' spring game on April 19.
The 2025 season will open at home against New Mexico on Aug. 30.
