Pros:

  • Dominant One-On-One Pass Rusher
When talking with dozens of offensive line prospects at last year's NFL Combine Tyler Baron's name was mentioned more than anyone's as a defender who gave them problems. Why? He wins his one-on-ones at a scary high rate thanks to his strength and unbelievable use of proper leverage befitting of each individual pass rush snap.
  • Perfect Pure Edge Defender Prototype Athletic Build
At 6'5, 260 pounds with length, strength, sufficient bend, and speed Tyler Baron looks like the perfect odd-front pass rusher. He can also hold up when he has to shift to any end position as well given his physical traits.
  • Extremely Impressive Rates Stats for Four Years
Dating back to his second season with the Tennessee Vols, Tyler Baron was a pass rush win and pressure rate monster. When he was still 19 years old he was posting pressure rates around 125% of positional expectation (15% vs. 12%). This past year he was winning over 30% of his one-on-one true pass rush sets and posting pressures 19% of the time, which is near typical marks for first round prospects although he is not considered that highly by most.

Cons

  • Lacks Elite Flexibility and Bend
He wins with strength, leverage, and burst, but his bend is still a little lacking. He does have enough to dip the shoulder and get around the edge, but most top tier tackles may be able to force him too far outside, washing him out of the play in the NFL.
  • Tackle Consistency from Game to Game
This one is a bit odd. Baron seemed to fix his missed tackle issue in his final season with the Tennessee Vols, but when he joined Miami this past year he struggled in about half his games. Sometimes his misses were linked to him pursuing from an odd angle, forcing a less than typical tackle attempt. Other times he just got himself out of position. Not a huge issue, but one that strangely popped up again in his final year.
  • Versatility Limitations
Tyler Baron does one thing really well: win in pass rush situations from the edge. He's also good enough in run pursuit on the back side of rush attempts, but he's not an absolute game-changer there. Baron may be limited to a pass rush specialist role early on, but his lack of elite bend may limit him there versus his college success. Or perhaps he settles into an edge setting strong side odd-front type who can utilize his strength and understanding of leverage to create havoc against the run. However, he's far from having a well-rounded skill set. Baron has some growing to do if he wants to be on the field every down.

Player Evaluation:

Tyler Baron measures like the perfect prototype edge rusher in odd front looks, but he has strength to win when he shifts slightly inside too. He wasn't a natural one-on-one winner in pass rush matchups early on in his career as he was a bit too stiff. However, in recent years that's changed.

Baron's more consistent win rates can be attributed to his significant increase in play strength and just enough bend to force himself where he needs to go. He needs to add some more complex pass rush moves to his arsenal, but his understanding of leverage offsets technical limitations the majority of the time.

Player Comparison:

Boye Mafe
Tyler Baron is quite similar in stature and style to Boye Mafe. They both find success as standup edge rushers, but can stick their hand in the dirt if they have to here and there. Mafe and Baron both play extremely smart and disciplined in run defense, setting the edge well, and pursuing ferociously. And while they aren't the most flexible pass rushers their strength mixed with adequate agility and burst can get them around the edge, allowing for some spectacular diving sacks from time to time.
