Colston Loveland, TE

Height: 6'5
Weight: 245 pounds
Age: 20
College: Michigan

Strengths

  • Movement skills: Very fluid mover. Runs routes crisply and is smooth in how he moves in open space. Doesn't waste any of his movements.
  • Route running: Loveland takes those movement skills and maximizes how he eats up space. Runs in-breaking routes very smoothly with no wasted motion and doesn't lose momentum in doing so.
  • Size and athleticism: A mismatch tight end is a cheat code in today's NFL. Loveland has plus athleticism to pair with a great catch radius

Weaknesses

  • Frame: Loveland's height and catch radius are huge pluses in the passing game, but his lack of muscle mass is a real concern. There is plenty of time to add muscle, especially with how long tight ends usually take to develop.
  • Run blocking: There is some effort there, which is always a good thing. However, the frame issues listed above come into play for Loveland when it comes to blocking. He gets beaten by linebackers consistently, shedding Loveland to make the tackle far too often.
  • Drops: Loveland has too many drops on his record. In his first two seasons at Michigan, Loveland dropped seven passes on 89 targets.

Player Evaluation

Loveland is going to be a fascinating player for some teams over the next few months. If you want a player who can be a lethal addition and mismatch in the passing game, he will be someone highly coveted by those teams. If you want a balanced and well rounded tight end who can block with effectiveness, that isn't what Loveland brings to the table.

There is plenty of room to grow with his frame, as he doesn't turn 21 until April. However, sheerly adding muscle isn't going to be a cure-all for those issues. The effort is there on blocking so projecting him to be better in that area isn't a crazy thought.

Player Comparison

Mike Gesicki

This is going to feel a little weird, especially with how Gesicki's play over the last two years has suffered. However, this is a play-style comp and it fits where Loveland is right now.

Gesicki is a tall, lean tight end with a lot of pass-catching acumen but issues in blocking. The one thing that Loveland does have is an increased effort in comparison to Gesicki, which will serve him well as he continues to improve his frame with muscle.
