Michigan's Starting Quarterback Decision Trending One Way

Michigan has had an open quarterback competition during spring practice between Bryce Underwood, Mikey Keene, and Jadyn Davis.

All three have gotten starting reps but according to On3's Pete Nakos, Underwood has emerged as the favorite for the gig. He is "trending" towards being the starting quarterback this fall.

There is still a long way to go in this competition but it would be quite an accomplishment if Underwood got the gig. He's a true freshman and was the top overall recruit in the 2025 recruiting class, per 247Sports composite rankings.

There is a lot of hype for Underwood since he was so good in high school. He was originally committed to LSU before flipping his commitment to Michigan.

Keene is still being considered for the job after transferring from Fresno State. Keene spent the last two seasons with Fresno State after starting his collegiate career with UCF. He was with UCF for two seasons (2021-22) before transferring to Fresno State.

Keene completed 70.5% of his passes for 2,892 yards through the air, 18 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 2024. That season came after he finished the 2023 season with 2,976 yards through the air, 24 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

If he doesn't win the gig, he'd be a solid backup to Underwood and would help mentor him throughout the season.

Michigan is coming off a 2024 season in which it finished 8-5. Michigan beat its biggest rival, Ohio State, for a fourth consecutive season in its last game of the regular season before beating Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

The Wolverines won the national title during the 2023 season and are trying to get back to being one of the top contenders for the 2025 season.
