One of Marcus Freeman's former signal-callers is reportedly drawing some big interest in the transfer portal.
According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, ex-Fighting Irish backup Steve Angeli is on the recruiting circuit and is set to meet with one of the surprise teams of the 2024 college football season.
Per Zenitz, Angeli will be taking the trip to Upstate New York to hear a pitch from Fran Brown about potentially joining the Syracuse Orange — who won 10 games and led the nation in passing last year with Ohio State transfer Kyle McCord.

Angeli ranks as one of the best available players in the transfer portal. Syracuse led the nation in passing last year with Kyle McCord at QB.https://t.co/10Sz3YwNKg pic.twitter.com/alHHcz5PFz
The former three-star prospect is widely-regarded as the No. 2 QB left in the portal following Nico Iamaleava's decision to leave Tennessee for UCLA.
But the Orange are also dealing with some portal losses of their own this offseason— like in the case of wide receiver Trebor Pena who made his feelings clear about Syracuse's offense and wanting more money.
"We paid him enough," Brown told reporters. "He was going to get paid more. There were some numbers that were asked to me that I didn't feel I would be able to do and move on. Of course, I treated him right. I took care of him. Done everything that was needed. I just said to him, you gotta go."
"With all due respect, to everybody in the country, to every wide receiver, to everybody that's doing all this stuff — if you want to make $2 million at wide receiver, that's the little homie over at Ohio State [Jeremiah Smith]," Brown added. "Ain't nobody else making that money. I ain't giving no wide receiver no $2 million, man, in college."
"Nah. That ain't me. I ain't doing that. I can't do that. Unless they tell me that we get a chance to have Travis Hunter," the coach admitted. "He could come back to college and he could come here and play for us, then he gonna get some of my check. But I ain't paying nobody $2 million this year. We ain't giving nobody that."
Angeli is likely just looking for a chance to get on the field after playing behind Riley Leonard and Sam Hartman the past couple years — and the Orange may present that opportunity if they can convince him SU is the place to be.
