Who needs a head coach?
It’s a battle of conference champions - Clemson vs Texas in the CFP is the only other one of those after Marshall tapped out against Army - but neither team is its normal regular season self with Ohio head man Tim Albin taking off for Charlotte and Jacksonville State’s Rich Rodriguez going retro with a second-stint at West Virginia.
Both team’s offensive coordinators - Rod Smith for the Gamecocks and Brian Smith for the Bobcats - will take over in what should be an entertaining game if you love ground attacks.
Ohio has won five straight bowl games going back to 2016, Jacksonville State beat Louisiana last year in its first ever bowl appearance, and these two should bring the energy.

The running game should still be okay. RichRod might be in Morgantown, but QB Tyler Huff is expected to still be around - he’s the sparkplug - along with top running back Tre Stewart.
The Gamecocks were second in the nation in rushing, the offense should still be explosive, and the team is fantastic in the turnover margin. Ohio doesn’t have a massive turnover problem lately, but it gave it up 20 times on the year. The MAC champ can't get behind - it's not great when it has to force the passing game.
Jacksonville State will attack the ball and try to force big plays, and …
Again, to emphasize this way too much, at the moment, Ohio should have just about everyone around - other than the head coach - and the personnel appears to be in place.
Jacksonville State should be relatively okay on offense, but the defense loses a whole slew of key parts, especially in the secondary. The Gamecock defensive backfield isn’t totally wiped out by the transfer portal, but it’s not in great shape.
But it’ll be the ground game that should matter the most for Ohio.
Jacksonville State is more explosive, but Ohio can grind it out averaging over five yards per carry. The Bobcats are 10-2 when running for more than 115 yards, they should be able to control the time of possession battle, and …
Welcome to the Ohio run defense.
It’s fifth in the nation allowing fewer than 100 yards per game. But the team is 2-3 when allowing more than 115 yards and 8-0 when giving up fewer.
Can the Jacksonville State ground game work? Yes, it’s just a question of how much damage it can do. The team is 8-0 when running for more than 230 yards and 1-4 when running for fewer.
Kentucky ran for 206 yards on Ohio. No one else got to 165.
