20 movies that make you want to travel

Movies are a form of escapism. Despite some being realistic or based on real events, movies have always been able to transport us to other places. Like any art form, they take your mind off reality, which is why they can feel like mini-vacations. Whether it's a turquoise ocean or a tranquil mountain range, you can enjoy views from your very own couch. So grab a cocktail, umbrella and beach towel, and get ready to enjoy some wonderful cinematic escapes.

Amarcord (1973)

Amarcord (1973)
The Criterion Collection

Any movie set in Italy is going to be gorgeous, but Federico Fellini takes cinematic vacation to a whole other level. We're talking beaches, countrysides, cobblestone alleys, gorgeous women and grand vivacious colors. Everything about this childhood reminiscence is alive, from the wacky characters that make up Fellini's town to the dream sequences that make up his childhood memories.

Before Sunrise (1995)

Before Sunrise (1995)
The Criterion Collection

You can't have a list of vacation movies and not include Before Sunrise. That would be like taking a train through Europe and not looking out your window. A window into the romance of two singles on vacation, Richard Linklater's film is a treat for the traveler.

Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants (2005)

Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants (2005)
Warner Bros.

There's not just one vacation in this classic rom-com. There's four! When four besties go their separate ways for summer, they stay connected by a pair of jeans. It's a one-size-fits-all comedy that everyone can enjoy.

The Parent Trap (1998)

The Parent Trap (1998)
Disney Pictures

Best child performance ever? Maybe. Lindsay Lohan plays twins with the energy of a firecracker. A great family film that makes you want to travel? Most certainly. Who doesn't enjoy watching Lohan try to get her parents back together?

Under the Tuscan Sun (2003)

Under the Tuscan Sun (2003)

The Holiday (2006)

The Holiday (2006)
Columbia Pictures

If the English countryside or the sunny beaches don't do it for you, look at the cast! This comedy about women swapping homes includes Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jack Black and Jude Law, directed by Nora Ephron. Now that's a rental worth booking!

La Piscine (1969)

La Piscine (1969)
Embassy Pictures

This may be the coolest movie ever made. With Alain Delon lounging in the sun with his girlfriend, some incredible vistas and some indelible outfits, it's a movie that makes you want to book a flight while you're watching it. And maybe buy some new outfits as well.

Luca (2021)

Luca (2021)
Pixar Entertainment / Walt Disney Pictures

A seaside town, a sea monster and a boy without friends. This Pixar film doesn't sound like it would mix, but occasionally different ingredients can make for a savory bowl of pasta.

Around the World in 80 Days (1956)

Around the World in 80 Days (1956)
United Artists

A bunch of movie stars race around the world, crossing Australia, Africa, India and Italy. They make it to every continent, but do they make it out alive?

Jaws (1975)

Jaws (1975)
Universal Studios

Our list includes beaches all over the world, but only one is being ravaged by a shark. Jaws won't make you want to visit the town, but it does make you want to visit a small beach town elsewhere.

National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)

National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)
Warner Bros.

Okay, so nothing seems to go right for this family. Unless of course they were supposed to turn left, in which case they most certainly turned right. But there's something about the scenery that makes you want to take a road trip of your own.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
Paramount Pictures

This ditch day is similar to what many people try to do on vacation: see an entire city in a day. Ferris goes to famous sights, restaurants and museums, while still leaving room for spontaneity. It's a ridiculously fun trip for the audience.

Roman Holiday (1953)

Roman Holiday (1953)
Paramount Pictures

An eternally gorgeous film set in the Eternal City, this romance sees a princess spend a day with a journalist in Rome. Pasta, views and comedy ensue.

Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (1953)

Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (1953)
The Criterion Collection

How to describe Monsieur Hulot's Holiday? Well, there's really no way to describe any of Jacques Tati's films. The director makes films that don't feel like anything else — in this case, a vacation on the beach where no one acts normal — least of all the main character, who winds up in a litany of comedic situations.

The Passenger (1975)

The Passenger (1975)
MGM

No one wants to be on the same trip as this journalist, who wanders through a map of stunning locations as if he knew death were around the corner. The locations of Michelangelo Antonioni's films are almost always incredible, but the people who inhabit them are almost always miserable. That being said, you can imagine yourself having a great vacation in all the places this character visits.

Ponyo (2008)

Ponyo (2008)
Studio Ghibli

You could put any Hayao Miyazaki film on this list. The director builds worlds that don't just exist, but breathe, sing and soar to life. Inspired by painters like Monet and Renoir, his worlds have a lyrical quality that are in tune with nature. From grass rustling in the wind to waves lapping against the shore, his take on a sea monster turned human is more stunning than any other.

Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
Focus Features

Exploring has always been something kids are drawn to. They don't need maps or trains or travel itineraries. They simply go out and explore. Wes Anderson captures that beautifully in this film about children on the run.

In Bruges (2008)

In Bruges (2008)
Focus Features

The locations? Stunning. The plot? Terrifying. This might not be a movie you want to live in — it's about hilariously mundane hitmen — but the locations make you want to visit.

The Sound of Music (1965)

The Sound of Music (1965)
20th Century Fox

Who doesn't want to take a trip to the Alps after watching this movie? The Nazis aside, this is a gorgeous production with incredible locations.

The Princess Bride (1987)

The Princess Bride (1987)
MGM

It's not Italian or set in Italy. It's not even set in real life. But there aren't many films that make you want to travel more than The Princess Bride. A fairytale with scenic locations, this tale of a kidnapped princess and her true love is a truly wonderful film.
