20 awesome superpowers we can thank fiction for

The ability to freeze water isn't the most common, but it is epic, especially in H2O: Just Add Water, when the characters turn into mermaids from a single drop of liquid.

Even though this is one of the most common superpowers in fiction, it will always be incredible to watch a totally unrealistic scene with punches, kicks, and broken limbs.

Shapeshifting in science fiction has always been pretty impressive; however, shapeshifting any liquid substance into what you want takes the cake.

It's always exciting to watch characters with superspeed in movies like The Incredibles and Twilight . However, we've also seen this power in real life — first with Usain Bolt and now with Noah Lyles.

It's pretty awesome to heat and boil water with your hands rather than do it traditionally.

We never knew elasticity was a superpower before seeing Elastagirl in The Incredibles. However, after watching her turn into a speedboat, trampoline, and parachute, we recognize it's a vital ability for superheroes to have.

And if those first three powers with water weren't cool enough, what do you think of the ability to turn liquid into a jelly-like substance? In the Nickelodeon series H2O, Isabella used this power on numerous occasions, and the best part about it is that she could burst it into pieces if she wanted.

Since we're speaking of fictional powers, regeneration, or the ability to heal oneself or others, is one of the best we've ever seen. Although it's not that exciting of an ability, it's extremely useful and could come in handy when one needs it most.

Being able to perceive the thoughts of others has been an epic superpower. However, it's also gotten some characters into a bit of trouble. Nonetheless, it's a useful power that could be quite beneficial to the user.

Sky High's Gwen Grayson could manipulate technology simply by using her mind. Who wouldn't want to create electric bolts at the drop of a dime?

Superheros use this ability for important tasks. Just look at when Superman rewound time to save Lois Lane. But if we could travel time, it'd be used for something less exciting, like avoiding traffic. 

Jack Jack from The Incredibles had more powers than his entire family combined. Not only could he shapeshift, he could multiply, turn himself into a purple demon, burst into flames, and switch dimensions.

Another unique ability we saw in Sky High was the power to self-duplicate. Penny Lent, Gwen's best friend, displayed this ability when she turned into the entire cheerleading team.

Everybody knows having the ability to see the future would be a great privilege. If we had the power, we'd use it for good, like creating a massive winning parlay ticket or discovering Beyoncé's next album release date.

This power gives users the ability to create, touch, and control fire, essentially making them indestructible. We've seen it in Avatar, Sky High, DC Comics, and Charmed.

Having X-ray vision was enough for Superman, so it's certainly enough to be listed here.

We've seen invisibility in several superhero and magical movies. Still, Violet Parr's ability to create unbreakable force fields in The Incredibles has to be one of the most fun displays of the superpower in cinema.

Wind control may not sound all that interesting, but it may be one of the most versatile powers in fiction. Just think about it: Holders of this ability could create powerful blasts and wind blades and even whip up a tornado if needed.

Flight really doesn't need an explanation. We've all dreamed of how cool it would be to fly next to Thor from one place to the next.

We couldn't forget about the greats who had magical powers. We've seen it displayed in several classics, like Harry Potter and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and modern-day sitcoms, like Wizards of Waverly Place. Despite being somewhat of a common ability in science fiction, creators of these programs turned it into a world unique to them (hello, Hogwarts!), and that's one thing we love about it.
