The full Fantastic Four trailer shows the iconic superhero quartet facing off against Galactus and preparing for a new baby. However, the Fantastic Four and Hollywood have had a complicated relationship over the years. After 2015’s attempted reboot, Fan4tastic, was lambasted by critics and audiences, one has to wonder if this movie will suffer the same fate. Here are three questions we have about the new Fantastic Four trailer.
Robert Downey Jr. will be playing Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. In the midst of the fan theories about whether or not this means Iron Man is somehow alive, one also has to wonder if some form of Doctor Doom will appear in the new Fantastic Four. The trailer, however, showed no sign of him. Of course, the heroes will already have their hands full fighting Galactus, but perhaps Doctor Doom will be in a post-credit scene.
Hollywood loves to tell superhero origin stories. In the case of the Fantastic Four, their origin story has already been told twice. One can easily understand why this movie is set after the Fantastic Four gain their powers. A TV host even says, “We all know the story” in the trailer. However, the trailer shows that they’re already beloved celebrities as well, as if they saved the world in an event we missed. There is a difference between starting after the origin story and feeling like the audience missed something.
The film’s subtitle, First Steps, has a double meaning. It references both the first steps into heroism and the first steps a baby takes. Sue Storm is pregnant. Since there aren’t many superheroes who have to save the world while pregnant, this could add an extra dimension to the story. In addition, the movie apparently takes place in an “alternate” 1960s. This could mean that the baby, now grown, might appear in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe project as the multiverse unfolds.
While the plot of the Silver Surfer heralding the coming of Galactus was already done in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, it looks like this movie could tell a fresh version of that story. The new Fantastic Four trailer promises an epic fight with Galactus, but it remains to be seen whether or not the movie can deliver on that. However, we have Pedro Pascal, The Mandalorian himself, as Mr. Fantastic. That should generate people’s interest.
