7 movies that deserve sequels might seem like a strange topic. Hollywood is obsessed with sequels, after all. Franchises get stretched out long past their natural end so long as there is money to be made. However, amid franchise milking, some movies that deserve sequels get overlooked. Here are 7 movies that deserve great sequels.
Christopher Nolan’s world of shared dreams has so much potential to be explored further. The gang could go on new missions to implant ideas into other people’s minds and travel into new dreams. The dream possibilities are endless. Alas, the movie had an ambiguous ending where (SPOILER) the audience is unsure whether or not Cobb is still dreaming. It generated a lot of internet discussion, but it also killed any hope for a franchise. Nevertheless, one of the top picks in the 7 movies list deserves a sequel.
Though Disney and Pixar have been on a sequel kick, they don’t seem to have considered a sequel to Brave. While the movie had uneven writing and storytelling, the world and characters could be further developed to become amazing. A sequel where Merida is older and now must face the challenges of becoming queen could reveal new layers of her character.
This one seems like it should have already happened, especially since Stieg Larsson wrote two sequels to the original novel. The movie featured excellent performances by Daniel Craig and Roony Mara, the latter of whom received an Oscar nomination. Audiences would probably love to see the return of Mara’s Lisbeth Salander, but it’s been fourteen years and there’s been no sequel in sight. One of the 7 movies that deserve a sequel.
This thrilling horror movie, based on John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel, Let the Right One In, is vastly underappreciated. While there was a Showtime TV series based on the same book, it was cancelled after one season, and it wasn’t technically connected to the Let Me In movie. Of course, the child vampire Abby would now have to be recast, but it could still be awesome to see further terrifying adventures of Abby and her human friend Owen.
For some reason, DreamWorks has never made a sequel to this delightfully imaginative film, despite its cult following. Even though this movie underperformed at the box office, its following has become large enough by now to justify a sequel. There are so many possible adventures that the Guardians could have. A sequel could have the Guardians facing how children grow older and naturally stop believing in magic. DreamWorks, make it happen!
This one will almost certainly never happen, which is a shame. While a sequel was planned, it was cancelled when the first movie bombed at the box office. At least, it made it to this list of 7 movies that deserve a sequel. It’s a real loss, since the creative world Disney created in the first film deserves to be explored further. In addition, Jim Hawkins’ rich character arc could be developed even more, and it would be a treat to reunite with the other appealing characters. However, even though Treasure Planet has a strong online cult following, Disney still ignores its existence. At least we can dream of what might have been and include it in the 7 movies list.
Yes, Disney is still milking Star Wars for all it’s worth, but hear me out. Solo added further layers to Han’s character, and it had an open ending that made further adventures possible. A sequel could show how Han gained and then lost favor with Jabba the Hutt. Han and Qi’ra could reunite, and Han could have to face how she betrayed him. We could also see the optimistic Han from Solo sink further towards the cynical Han in A New Hope. There’s so much potential to be had.
There are definitely more than 7 movies that deserve sequels, even with Hollywood’s sequel obsession. Even though we are bombarded by franchise movies regularly, remember that sequels in themselves are not inherently bad. Sometimes continuing a story is very worthwhile.
