The 23 best new TV shows of 2023

Every year, dozens of new TV shows debut. It is effectively impossible to catch them all, especially if you want to watch the shows that, you know, have been on for years already and you already enjoy. There were some new shows in 2023 worth your time, though. Finding them can be a little circuitous at times. You may not have every streaming service necessary. Like we said, though, catching everything is impossible these days. Just do what you can, or rather what you feel like.

“Paul T. Goldman”

“Paul T. Goldman”
Peacock

On the first day of 2023, “Paul T. Goldman” debuted on Peacock, and even now wrapping one’s head around Jason Woliner’s six-part series is a puzzler. It’s a true crime documentary, but also a satire of true crime, but also a weird, meta series that breaks the rules of documentaries with intention. The story focuses on Paul Finkelman, who stars as Paul T. Goldman in the reenactments within the show, and that kind of tells you everything, but also nothing.

“The Last of Us”

“The Last of Us”
HBO

Much as it was not required to have read George R.R. Martin’s books to get into “Game of Thrones” on HBO, you didn’t have to be a video game enthusiast to jump on the “Last of Us” train. Having Pedro Pascal in a lead role certainly helped. The post-apocalyptic story became the latest attention-grabbing HBO drama to remind us that, oh yeah, some TV is still appointment TV.

“Poker Face”

“Poker Face”
Peacock

Maybe Natasha Lyonne isn’t actually playing Columbo, an idea that generated fodder on the internet, but she did get a chance to bring her distinct style to the case-of-the-week procedural. Lyonne plays a woman on the run who has a knack for knowing who is lying, and an itch to do what’s right across the country. She’s a distinct performer, but we think she was great, as she was in “Russian Doll.”

“Digman!”

“Digman!”
Comedy Central

Do you like the idea of a comedic version of Indiana Jones? Then check out “Digman!” Andy Samberg co-created the show, in which he also voices the lead, and the premise is that it takes place in a world where archaeologists are celebrities. Comedy Central’s original programming has certainly taken a hit in the era of cord cutting, but occasionally there is something there worth checking out.

“Jury Duty”

“Jury Duty”
Freevee

What if “The Joe Schmo Show” had critical acclaim? “Jury Duty” did not seem likely to make a splash. It’s your classic hoax reality show, wherein one person thinks they are in a real situation but everybody else is an actor. However, “Jury Duty” managed to earn an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series, and James Mardsen (yes, the famous actor) got an Emmy nomination for playing a version of himself.

“The Muppets Mayhem”

“The Muppets Mayhem”
Disney+

In many ways, the most recent Muppets TV show sticks to the form. It’s puppet-forward, family friendly, and packed with celebrity cameos. However, “The Muppets Mayhem” has sharper writing and funnier content than much of the recent output for the brand. Plus, being built around The Electric Mayhem, there’s an excuse for plenty of songs.

“Skull Island”

“Skull Island”
Netflix

The film “Kong: Skull Island” introduced the idea of the world of the island that gave us King Kong. It was a period piece, as is “Skull Island,” the Netflix show spinning off from it. Set in the ‘90s, it’s notably animated in a style that borrows from the aesthetics of anime. That’s pretty on the mark for a show with the premise of “Skull Island.”

“Twisted Metal”

“Twisted Metal”
Peacock

“Twisted Metal” was a favorite of many PlayStation enthusiasts back in the day. You could drive around in an ice cream truck and blow stuff up! The sandbox of that game became the backdrop for a TV show that fit the ethos of the video games. That is to say, it’s vulgar, it’s violent, and it features a killer clown named Sweet Tooth.

“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”

“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”
Apple TV+

Back to the world of the Godzilla and Kong films of modern times. Set in the MonsterVerse, the film focuses on the organization of Monarch as it deals with monsters spanning decades. Speaking of spanning decades, the hook of “Legacy of Monsters” is that Wyatt Russell plays a younger version of the same character played by Kurt Russell, his real-life father.

“Scott Pilgrim Takes Off”

“Scott Pilgrim Takes Off”
Netflix

Years later, Edgar Wright’s cult film “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” got a sequel. Not a movie, though, but an anime-styled series on Netflix. Wright returned, but notably so did the actors from the film, who lent their voices to the show.

“Night Court”

“Night Court”
NBC

Yes, “Night Court” was a sitcom back in the day, but the 2023 reboot was essentially a new show. John Larroquette did return as Dan Fielding, the role that won him Emmy after Emmy, but otherwise it’s basically a new sitcom set in the same world, including Melissa Rauch starring as the daughter of Judge Harry Stone from the original show. While the old-school tone of the sitcom is maybe a bit out of step with modern times, it’s a solid comedy, and a chance to see Larroquette in action.

“Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur”

“Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur”
Disney Channel

Look, it’s an animated show called “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.” It’s based upon a Marvel comic. The show gave Disney Channel audiences a superhero show for them, an animated one at that. It looks cool, and again, the title is awesome.

13 of 23

“Animal Control”

“Animal Control”
FOX

Joel McHale has bounced around quite a bit since the end of “Community,” but it seems like his new sitcom will stick. “Animal Control” is about, well, an animal control department. McHale doesn’t reinvent the wheel in terms of his comedic persona, but that isn’t necessary for a network sitcom. The show has been renewed for a second season, keeping the animal-related humor going.

“The Consultant”

“The Consultant”
Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime has a history of producing original drama series with impressive leads that kind of fly under the radar. Meanwhile, everybody is Bosch-ing it up over at “Bosch.” “The Consultant” stars Christoph Waltz, a two-time Oscar winner, and he got plenty of praise for his performance in this darkly-comedic thriller, unsurprisingly.

15 of 23

“The Diplomat”

“The Diplomat”
Netflix

“The Diplomat” is straightforward, a classic potboiler political thriller. However, by dint of being on Netflix, it’s able to be more risqué than shows of this ilk on network television. Keri Russell stars in the lead role. Now, maybe the show isn’t as dense and rich as “The Americans,” but it’s designed to be breezier, and Russell still got an Emmy nomination.

16 of 23

“Jeopardy! Masters”

“Jeopardy! Masters”
ABC

Yeah, “Jeopardy! Masters” is effectively just “Jeopardy!,” but it is a new show. Ken Jennings, now a host and retired from active competition, saw some of the best “Jeopardy!” players of all-time competing in a tournament. The primetime special lasted for 10 episodes and really satisfied the diehard “Jeopardy!” fans looking to see the best of the best in action.

17 of 23

“American Born Chinese”

“American Born Chinese”
Disney+

Disney+’s action-focused output is largely built upon the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “American Born Chinese” steps outside that paradigm. While neither of them is the star, the show does notably feature two recent Oscar winners in Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh. Isn’t that alone worth checking out?

18 of 23

“Goosebumps”

“Goosebumps”
Disney+

There was previously a “Goosebumps” show, but that was episodic and mostly just rehashing of the stories from the R.L. Stine books. The new Disney+ show does things differently. It’s an ongoing family-friendly horror show that tells an overarching story that involves many elements of the books. Yes, Slappy the Dummy is prominently involved.

“History of the World, Part II”

“History of the World, Part II”
Hulu

Mel Brooks naming his film “History of the World, Part I” was a joke, but that joke paid off decades later. Instead of making another movie, Brooks helped helm a limited series on Hulu that serves as a sequel. This allowed Brooks and crew to flesh out the comedic set pieces across history. Wanda Sykes, Nick Kroll, and Ike Barinholtz served as the recurring main cast, but with plenty of notable cameos, naturally.

“White House Plumbers”

“White House Plumbers”
HBO

You likely know at least something about Watergate, and perhaps have even heard of the “Plumbers,” who did some dirty work to try and ensure the re-election of Richard Nixon. HBO’s limited series focused on two of these Plumbers, E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy. While the tone of the show was a bit inconsistent — it’s satirical and dramatic simultaneously — the peaks make up for the valleys, and Justin Theroux was entertaining as Liddy.

“Love & Death”

“Love & Death”
HBO

The dramatization of true crime stories has become commonplace, but sometimes the cache draws attention, even to a sordid story of small-town murder. David E. Kelley wrote and directed “Love & Death,” which had the benefit of a cast led by Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons, two excellent actors.

“Justified: City Primeval”

“Justified: City Primeval”
FX

“City Primeval” is sort of a sequel series to “Justified,” but also definitely a standalone series. If you haven’t seen the original FX show, you could still enjoy “City Primeval,” based on a different Elmore Leonard book that doesn’t involve Raylan Givens. Timothy Olyphant as Raylan was infused into the Detroit-set story. It’s a taut thriller, and it was great to see Olyphant as Marshall Givens once again.

“Ahsoka”

“Ahsoka”
Disney+

If you just want action from your “Star Wars” series, go with “Ahsoka.” It starts a little slow, Sabine Wren has a lot of Poochie vibes early on, but then it took off with gusto. If you watched, say, “Andor,” and found yourself thinking, “Just fight each other with lightsabers,” then you should be satisfied.

Maple Leafs organization trades for 6-foot-3 physical winger

The Toronto Marlies have made a trade, picking up additional help up front with the acquisition of a physical winger. The trade deadline may be over in the NHL, but that doesn't mean that the Toronto Maple Leafs organization as a whole is done making moves. Earlier on Friday, the Toronto Marlies acquired physical winger Brandon Baddock from the Rockford Ice Hogs, the AHL affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks. The Toronto Marlies have made a trade, picking up additional help up front with the acquisition of a physical winger. "The Marlies have added more depth after losing pieces at the NHL trade deadline. Toronto adds Brandon Baddock from Rockford for future considerations. 6-foot-3 physical winger who has 7 points and 86 PIMs in 38 games," per insider Kyle Cushman. Ice Hogs general manager Mark Bernard released the following statement in which he thanked Baddock for his contributions for the franchise and wished him luck in the future. "I want to thank Brandon and his family for all of their contributions on and off the ice during the past two seasons. Brandon and his wife Hannah have made an incredible impact in the Rockford community right from the start of their time here. With the roster constraints we have experienced this season regarding the league's Veteran Rule, I wanted to provide Brandon the opportunity to play night in and night out." Baddock was drafted 161st overall in 2014 by the New Jersey Devils. The Marlies next play the Charlotte Checkers on Saturday.

Legendary 'SportsCenter' host rips ESPN's Stephen A. Smith

The sports world is still reacting to the viral confrontation between LeBron James and Stephen A. Smith. James went up to Smith during the Los Angeles Lakers' game against the New York Knicks and asked the longtime ESPN personality to refrain from mentioning his son Bronny. Fans and analysts have fallen on both sides of the discussion. Some have said that James was out of line for criticizing a journalist for talking about a current player, and others feel that Smith has singled out James and his son. One former ESPN host falls in the second category, and he criticized Smith for calling the confrontation "weak." “OK, first of all, it’s not weak,” said former "SportsCenter" anchor Dan Patrick said on Wednesday's edition of his show (h/t Awful Announcing). “Because weak would’ve been tweeting something out. He confronted you. So, that’s not weak. He didn’t push him or anything; there were words exchanged.” Patrick attempted to add more perspective by explaining the rationale behind LeBron wanting to spend one season playing with his son, and how the Lakers have managed things this season. “It’s not like LeBron sent his son to Afghanistan. His son is on the Lakers, acting like he’s the 55th player drafted. He’s a bench player. He goes back and forth to the G League," Patrick said. "It felt like it was over and above what needed to be said. We all understand. Bronny’s not going to be in the league when LeBron retires. He’s just not good enough to play. He can be a G League guy. Should’ve stayed another year at USC, but his dad is probably saying, ‘I don’t know how much longer I’m gonna play. I want to play with you.’ This has been his goal." Patrick also mentioned that Smith seemed to question LeBron's parenting, and that the insinuation about his skills as a father may have led to the nature of the confrontation. "Once he talks about, ‘I’m pleading with you as a father,’ I can’t," LeBron appeared to say while speaking to Richard Jefferson on Saturday night in Boston. The issue appears to be resolved, as James now has bigger issues to deal with after suffering a groin injury in that game against the Celtics. We'll see how things play out, but it's clear that Smith's feelings on the matter aren't the same as everyone else's.

Steelers Were Very Surprised By Justin Fields And It Has Caused A Massive Problem

The Pittsburgh Steelers seemed to have two legitimate options for their starting quarterback spot for the 2025 season. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields were brought to Pittsburgh ahead of the 2024 season on bargain deals. Fields started the first six games, but when Wilson returned from a calf injury, he finished the season as the starter. Fields handled the benching like a professional, but it feels like he didn’t take a liking to that decision from Mike Tomlin. The Steelers seemed to be in on Fields for the 2025 season, but he ultimately decided to leave when he received a better offer from the New York Jets. It was clear that the Steelers had faith in his potential, but Fields’ situation in Pittsburgh appeared to be a bit more complicated after the season. With his departure, the Steelers were forced to rethink their quarterback options, possibly shifting their focus to other candidates or adjusting their plans altogether. Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo joined The Pomp And Joe Show on 93.7 The Fan on Friday, where he shared some interesting information about Fields leaving for the Jets. Fittipaldo suggested that the decision came down to the Jets offering a more secure role for Fields, which was something the Steelers couldn’t guarantee him in 2025. This insight added another layer to the quarterback drama that has been unfolding in Pittsburgh, leaving fans wondering what the future holds for the position. "What we know at this point, is I do think the Steelers were caught off guard by Justin Fields leaving to the Jets," Fittipaldo said. "It would have been super simple. That was the first guy that they wanted." Fittipaldo shared something rather interesting about the Steelers being taken aback by the fact that Fields actually left them. It was reported that Tomlin likely expected to secure Fields on a discount, given his situation with the team. For Fields, his first six games in Pittsburgh were the best he had shown as a quarterback in the league, primarily because he protected the football and still managed to flash moments of brilliance. The Steelers saw potential in him but weren’t willing to meet his demands. However, Pittsburgh wasn’t willing to go as far as the Jets were in their offer to Fields, and that’s ultimately why he chose to leave. The situation came as a shock to the Steelers, who probably felt that Fields would be their top option for the 2025 season. Instead, he opted for more guaranteed money and the assurance that he would be the starting quarterback. That, apparently, was something the Steelers weren’t willing to provide him. The Steelers’ inability to guarantee Fields the starting role and secure his future in Pittsburgh ultimately led to his departure. While the team had shown confidence in him, they failed to offer the kind of stability that Fields was looking for, which paved the way for the Jets to make their move. This surprising turn of events left the Steelers reevaluating their quarterback strategy for the 2025 season. Steelers Losing Justin Fields Has Created Massive Uncertainty The Steelers’ first option was Fields, and his departure has created chaos within the organization. As soon as they realized the market for Fields was going to be much higher than they were willing to go, Pittsburgh began considering other quarterback options. Fields’ midseason benching in 2024 actually worked in his favor, as it highlighted his first six starts, which were solid, productive, and, most importantly, demonstrated his ability to protect the football. These performances, especially his flashes of brilliance, kept him fresh in the minds of teams in need of a quarterback, like the Jets. These highlight-reel moments gave the Jets and others the confidence to pursue Fields, knowing he still had untapped potential. Now, with the Steelers seemingly all in on Aaron Rodgers, they face the possibility of missing out on him and being left without a solid quarterback option for 2025. The surprise of Fields leaving has exposed the Steelers’ lack of a backup plan, leaving the team scrambling to reassess their quarterback situation and causing massive uncertainty in the Steel City.

New York Yankees Get Excellent News Out of Gerrit Cole's Elbow Surgery

The New York Yankees got devastating news this week when it was revealed that ace Gerrit Cole would miss the entire season because of an elbow injury. However, if you're looking silver linings, the Yankees got great news out of the surgery, Per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com: Gerrit Cole’s UCL surgery included internal bracing, according to the Yankees, which can reduce inflammation and speed recovery time. Generally speaking, this could mean he is closer to a 12-month recovery than if he had the procedure with the traditional method. Given when the injury occurred, there is even a slight chance that Cole could be ready for Opening Day in 2026. For example, Spencer Strider had Tommy John surgery early in the 2024 season and is set to come back by late April of this year. Lucas Giolito of the Red Sox had internal bracing done last spring training and was on track for an Opening Day return this year until he injured his hamstring. The 34-year-old Cole is one of the best pitchers of his era, having gone 153-80 over a 12-year career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros and Yankees. A six-time All-Star, Cole won the American League Cy Young Award in 2023 and has won two ERA titles. He dealt with elbow issues last season but returned to go 8-5 in 17 starts as the Yankees won the American League pennant. He pitched just 95 innings for the season, striking out 99. The Yankees will open up the season on March 27 at home against the Milwaukee Brewers.
