It's official: Today is Ayo Edebiri Day in Boston, with Mayor Michelle Wu announcing the news. She expressed on Instagram how everyone at Boston Latin School "had so much fun welcoming" the Emmy-award winning actress home.
She continued to explain: "From growing up in Dorchester to making us laugh on screens big and small, Ayo’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Her roots in Boston—her family, her community, her school—shaped the storyteller and powerhouse she is today. Ayo proves that you don’t have to fit the mold to break barriers, you just have to be bold enough to try. The City of Boston is deeply proud and grateful for Ayo’s contributions to the arts and to our city. Thank you Ayo for being an inspiration to BPS students and to young people all across America."
Edebiri shared her gratitude, writing, "So incredibly floored, honored and grateful for today. BLS is a very specific place and even if it wasn’t easy or your cup of tea, every kid should be able to have access to an education like that. I’m a product of Boston Public Schools and a product of well funded public services. I’m a product of diverse environments that worked to push the boundaries and meanings of inclusion. I’m a product of an environment that cared about kids having access to arts and the humanities if STEM wasn’t their thing. I’m a product of my teachers, who worked tirelessly often beyond the calling of their profession. I’m a product of my friends and family who I love very dearly and not just because they loved me in my hat phase(s)."
She then added, "I am very proud to be from a place as rich in history and mania as Boston. And especially proud to be from a city that has a mayor with as much fortitude, grace and care for her constituents and the world at large as @mayorwu — Lots of love. Very surreal."
Edebiri can most recently be seen starring in Opus. Next, she will be in After the Hunt, Ella McCay, and The Bear season 4.
