Every member of the "Saturday Night Live" Five-Timers Club

Once upon a time, the “Saturday Night Live” Five-Timers Club was rarified air. Only a handful of people had hosted “SNL” at least five times. To be fair, given that the show has been around for 50 years, it only makes sense the Five-Timer Club has grown. Most people still haven’t hosted “SNL” five times or more, but several people have. Here is every member of the Five-Timers Club.

1 of 27

Buck Henry

Buck Henry
NBC

Henry is known for being an acclaimed writer and for hosting “Saturday Night Live” all the time early on. Before the show was a cultural institution, a guy like Henry, who was around, game, and funny, was turned to time and time again. Henry first hosted in January 1976 and hosted for the fifth time less than two years later. He hosted for the 10th and final time in 1980.

Steve Martin

Steve Martin
NBC

Martin is one of the iconic “SNL” hosts. Some even thought he was a cast member given how often he was on the show. The comedy legend is the second-most-prolific host in the show’s history, and he joined the Five-Timers Club even faster than Henry. He hosted five times within one year and 181 days. Martin has kept going and hosted for the 16th time in 2022.

Elliott Gould

Elliott Gould
NBC

Gould is one of the best actors of all time, and he was something of a counterculture figure in the 1970s thanks to films like “M*A*S*H” and “The Long Goodbye.” To that end, his sixth and final time hosting “SNL” came in February 1980, so he was basically a ‘70s-only host. Like Henry, he first hosted in January of 1976, and in fact, Gould hosted the week before Henry.

4 of 27

Paul Simon

Paul Simon
NBC

Somehow, there is an asterisked member of the Five-Timers Club. Simon has appeared in multiple Five-Timers Club sketches. He’s also only hosted four times. So what gives? Well, Simon has made many appearances as a musical guest or just popped up on the show. It also probably helps that Simon has long been one of Lorne Michaels’ best friends. That’ll get you into the Five-Timers Club even if you aren’t technically a five-timer.

5 of 27

Chevy Chase

Chevy Chase
NBC

Chase was one of the original “Saturday Night Live” cast members. He was the first breakout star. Given that, he was also the first to leave the show for a movie career. That panned out well enough that Chase not only returned to host for the first time in 1978, but would eventually host eight times, the last of which came in 1997. It’s kind of surprising he got to return so often, given that Chase has long “enjoyed” a reputation as one of the most unpleasant people to work with.

6 of 27

Candice Bergen

Candice Bergen
NBC

The first woman on this list, you might think that Bergen was churning through “SNL” appearances while she was starring on “Murphy Brown.” That was a huge show, and she won five Emmys for it. However, Bergen actually made a few appearances in the 1970s. She was the first woman to ever host “SNL,” and the first person to ever host for a second time. Eventually, she would host during “Murphy Brown,” as Bergen hosted for the fifth and final time in 1990.

Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks
NBC

The idea of the Five-Timers Club really feels like it was codified with Hanks. That’s largely because for his fifth show he was in a Five-Timers Club sketch. The other members of the club (including, yes, Paul Simon) welcomed Hanks into the club, and thus the idea was truly born. Of course, since then Hanks has hosted five more times, because he is one of the best “SNL” hosts.

8 of 27

Danny DeVito

Danny DeVito
NBC

It took DeVito over a decade to do it, but he got into the Five-Timers Club eventually. In May 1982, DeVito hosted for the first time, back when he was known for “Taxi.” He hosted for the fifth time in 1993, and then added a sixth appearance in 1999. Even though “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” made DeVito popular with another generation, he has not hosted since then.

9 of 27

John Goodman

John Goodman
NBC

For a little while there, Goodman was as regular an “SNL” host as anybody. While he has not been as entrenched in the zeitgeist like Steve Martin or Tom Hanks, Goodman has hosted “SNL” on 13 occasions. During the heyday of “Roseanne” he hosted often enough to host five times in less than five years, and hosted most recently in 2013.

10 of 27

Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin
NBC

Baldwin is a quintessential “SNL” host, to be sure, and unlike Goodman, that has stuck in the cultural memory. He’s also the most prolific host, having handled the role a whopping 17 times. Baldwin first hosted in 1990 and last hosted in 2017. Unfortunately for him, Baldwin has become a polarizing figure in recent years, and so he may not get a chance to host again.

11 of 27

Bill Murray

Bill Murray
NBC

Murray is another former cast member, and he actually replaced Chase on the show. Like Chase, he would return to host, and to eventually join the Five-Timers Club. Although, Murray has hosted five times total. He first hosted in 1981, and finally hosted for a fifth time in 1999, so it took him almost 18 years to do it. One assumes that is because of Murray’s own decisions, as he is notoriously mercurial and hard to reach.

Christopher Walken
NBC

Walken is a beloved “SNL” host, so much so you might think that he has hosted more often than he has. Yes, Walken is in the Five-Timers Club, securing his spot in 2001. However, he’s actually only hosted seven times total, and not since 2008. It would seem Walken’s time hosting “SNL” is in the past.

13 of 27

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore
NBC

It took Barrymore almost 25 years to join the Five-Timers Club, but there is good reason for that. Her first hosting gig was a pure gimmick. Barrymore first hosted in 1982 when she was all of seven years old. That means she was barely in her thirties when she hosted for the fifth time, and she added a sixth hosting stint in 2009.

Justin Timberlake
NBC

Thanks in part to The Lonely Island, Timberlake became a popular host (and occasional musical guest). It may surprise you to know it’s been a bit for Timberlake, though. He first hosted in 2003 and was a pleasant surprise, and then he hosted for the fifth time in 2013. That was the last time he hosted, so it has been over a decade since the former boy band member hosted “SNL.”

15 of 27

Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck
NBC

Affleck was once one of the biggest movie stars in the world, though it always kind of seems like it was much to his chagrin. Hopefully he enjoyed hosting “SNL” as part of the promotional game, at least. He did do it five times. Affleck’s first appearance came in February 2000, and he last hosted in May 2013.

16 of 27

Tina Fey

Tina Fey
NBC

We add another former cast member into the mix. Fey not only appeared on “SNL,” but for several years was one of the head writers as well. “30 Rock” was one of the rare sitcoms produced in New York, making it easier for Fey to pop over to host “Saturday Night Live.” Fey first hosted in 2008 and her fifth show was a Christmas episode in 2015. She’s added one more hosting spot into the mix.

Scarlett Johansson
NBC

Hosting “SNL” six times has paid off for Johansson. She first hosted in January 2006 as she was beginning to emerge as a movie star. Johansson hosted for the fifth time in 2017 and the sixth time in 2019. In 2017, Johansson also began dating “SNL” writer and “Weekend Update” co-anchor Colin Jost. The two are now married and have a child.

18 of 27

Melissa McCarthy

Melissa McCarthy
NBC

It definitely feels like in another timeline McCarthy would have been a longtime and beloved “SNL” cast member. She came up in improv and sketch comedy and has shown she has the skill set to excel on the show. Of course, she would eventually become a movie star and get to host “SNL” five times between 2011 and 2017. Now that McCarthy’s movie career has tapered off, it’s possible she won’t host again, but it also definitely feels like Lorne and company could just say, “Hey, let’s get Melissa McCarthy back on the show!”

19 of 27

Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson
NBC

When Johnson first hosted “SNL” he was The Rock, and he was a professional wrestler. That was in 2000. By the time he was hosting for the fifth time in 2017, Johnson was a movie star and had ditched the whole “The Rock” thing. That’s certainly not the career arc we were expecting.

20 of 27

Jonah Hill

Jonah Hill
NBC

Hill is one of those people who got to host “SNL” after a big project instead of to promote it. “Superbad” came out in 2007 and became a huge hit, and then in March 2008 Hill got to host for the first time. Then he got to start hosting by means of promotion, with his fifth appearance coming in 2018. That’s his most recent host appearance to date.

21 of 27

Will Ferrell

Will Ferrell
NBC

Ferrell is an “SNL” legend, and many people’s pick for the best cast member ever (by many people we mean people who were 13 at some point during his tenure). Once he emerged as a movie star, it was obvious Ferrell would get the call to host, and it is not surprising that he is in the Five-Timers Club. His five hosting appearances came between 2005 and 2019, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he hosted again at some point.

22 of 27

Paul Rudd

Paul Rudd
NBC

Rudd was working for many years before he rose to a level of success that he got to host “SNL.” He hosted for the first time in 2008. That was a full 13 years after “Clueless!” Rudd made up for lost time, though. He hosted for a fifth time in December 2021, still pretty fresh in terms of the show returning after the COVID-19 pandemic.

23 of 27

John Mulaney

John Mulaney
NBC

Mulaney wrote for “Saturday Night Live” before his standup career took off, and indeed it took off. Though he has done less acting than most “SNL” hosts, Mulaney knows how the show works intimately and he has proven to be quite good at it as well. It took under four years for Mulaney to host five times, and he added a sixth hosting gig in 2024.

24 of 27

Woody Harrelson

Woody Harrelson
NBC

Henry and Martin entered the Five-Timers Club in under two years. Harrelson took his sweet time. He first hosted in November 1989. His fifth hosting appearance came in February 2023. That means it took a bit over 33 years for Harrelson to complete the path to the Five-Timers Club. Nobody has taken longer, not even Barrymore.

25 of 27

Emma Stone

Emma Stone
NBC

Emily “Emma” Stone (apparently she prefers to be called Emily and Emma is strictly a professional credits thing) is a big “SNL” fan so it’s no surprise she is glad to return when given the chance. She first hosted in October 2010, the year “Easy A” came out and back when she was still quite young. Stone hosted for the fifth time in December 2023, and one assumes that it won’t be the last time.

26 of 27

Kristen Wiig

Kristen Wiig
NBC

After spending several seasons as a “Saturday Night Live” cast member, Wiig finally got around to hosting. She couldn’t host for “Bridesmaids,” because she was still on the show when that movie came out. Instead, Wiig first hosted in May 2013, and hosted for the fifth time in April 2024. We'll be surprised if that’s her last appearance as a host.

27 of 27

Martin Short

Martin Short
NBC

The most recent addition to the Five-Timers Club is Short, who himself was a former cast member, albeit for one season in the 80s. Short currently holds the distinction for the longest time between his first hosting gig and his fifth, having taken nearly four decades to join the prestigious group.

Chris Morgan

Chris Morgan is a Detroit-based culture writer who has somehow managed to justify getting his BA in Film Studies. He has written about sports and entertainment across various internet platforms for years and is also the author of three books about '90s television.
