Madame Web hit theaters on Valentine's Day to very little fanfare after savage first reviews dubbed the film "worse than Morbius" and "one of the worst films of 2024", with some saying it "represents the death of the superhero genre".
Despite the damnations from critics who gave it an astounding 13% on Rotten Tomatoes and audiences being less than impressed, Madame Web's producer has sequel hopes.
In an exclusive interview with Discussing Film, Lorenzo di Bonaventura said, "hopefully, coming out of this first experience with Madame Web, the audience is going to embrace us enough to be able to tell the next story."
Bonaventura said, "Madame Web still hasn't mastered all of her skills", and the sequel would show her "trying to master her new powers and often failing".
Madame Web stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a New York metropolis paramedic who begins to demonstrate signs of clairvoyance. Forced to challenge revelations about her former, she must safeguard three young women from a deadly adversary who wants them destroyed.
S.J. Clarkson directs the ensemble cast of Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O'Connor, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Robert and Adam Scott, Kerry Bishé and Zosia Mamet.
There are no set plans for a sequel, but it seems Bonaventura is hopeful audiences will want to return to Cassandra's web.
