Martin Short's 20 best roles

You know him, you love him. He's Martin Short. Four seasons into Only Murders in the Building, let's revisit some of the comedy legend's best roles throughout his career.

Oliver Putnam, 'Only Murders in the Building'

Hulu

I think I speak for all fans of Only Murders in the Building when I say that Martin Short's Oliver Putnam is one of the funniest characters on television right now. Of course, seeing him work alongside longtime collaborator and friend Steve Martin is always a treat, and Selena Gomez rounds out the trio quite nicely.

Ned Nederlander, 'Three Amigos!'

Ned Nederlander, 'Three Amigos!'
Warner Bros.

Without Martin Short, Three Amigos! wouldn't be considered the classic it is today, and that's a fact. We can't imagine anyone else playing Ned Nederlander, and why would we want to? I mean, "My Little Buttercup," anyone?

Uncle Jack, 'Arrested Development'

Uncle Jack, 'Arrested Development'
Netflix

Martin Short certainly made the most of his short-lived role (I'm sorry) as Uncle Jack in Arrested Development. Although it was only one episode, I swear I remember him playing a bigger part in the series. I'll chalk it up to wishful thinking, but regardless, he was certainly memorable.

Jiminy Glick, 'Primetime Glick' & 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'

Comedy Central

I cannot tell you how thrilled I was to see Martin Short bring back Jiminy Glick on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The character originated on The Martin Short Show and quickly became a fully-fledged icon during Primetime Glick, resulting in a feature film and various television appearances. I can't be the only one who's excited to see what he does next.

B.E.N., 'Treasure Planet'

B.E.N., 'Treasure Planet'
Disney

This one is probably just for me, but I absolutely loved Treasure Planet. B.E.N. was my favorite character, so when I discovered that he was voiced by Martin Short, my love for him suddenly made sense. What an underrated performance and masterpiece of a film!

Franck Eggelhoffer, 'Father of the Bride' & 'Father of the Bride Part II'

Disney

Another one of Martin Short's best roles has to be Franck from Father of the Bride and Father of the Bride Part II. It was a pleasure to see the two comedy geniuses, Short and Steve Martin, team up again for what would inevitably become another hit.

Huy, 'The Prince of Egypt'

Huy, 'The Prince of Egypt'
Universal Pictures

The Prince of Egypt is one of the best animated films, and Martin Short was a part of that! Once again, acting opposite Steve Martin as Hotep, Short plays Huy, one of the high priests who provide much-needed comic relief throughout the film.

Jack Frost, 'The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause'

Jack Frost, 'The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause'
Disney

Did we need a third Santa Clause film? Probably not. Did Martin Short absolutely steal the show? One hundred percent. He's unsurprisingly hilarious, making him the best part of the entire movie. We'll remember his rendition of Jack Frost forever.

Stefano, 'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted'

Stefano, 'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted'
Paramount Pictures

Martin Short as the sea lion Stefano was a wonderful addition to the Madagascar franchise. Obviously, nothing tops the original film, but Short delivered, doing what he does best: making us laugh. That's all that matters.

Dr. Rudy Blatnoyd, D.D.S., 'Inherent Vice'

Dr. Rudy Blatnoyd, D.D.S., 'Inherent Vice'
Warner Bros.

A lot of people found Inherent Vice kind of odd, but if there is one thing we can all agree on, it's that Martin Short is fantastic, no matter the source material. Though surrounded by an amazing ensemble cast, Short once again stands out.

Jack Putter, 'Innerspace'

Jack Putter, 'Innerspace'
Warner Bros.

Martin Short has a way of making every project he touches turn into comedy gold, even if the critics can't always see it. His role as Jack Putter in Innerspace is no exception. Thankfully, the film has received proper recognition since its release.

Press Secretary Jerry Ross, 'Mars Attacks!'

Press Secretary Jerry Ross, 'Mars Attacks!'
Warner Bros.

We couldn't possibly forget about Martin Short's role as Press Secretary Jerry Ross in Mars Attacks! The cast were all such good sports, agreeing to be in this film, proving that they don't take themselves too seriously, much like Short in just about every project he's a part of.

Ned Perry, 'Three Fugitives'

Ned Perry, 'Three Fugitives'
Disney

Three Fugitives is a comedy that can easily be overlooked, but those who watched it as kids seem to have a deeper appreciation for it. This movie is incredibly underrated and one I'd call an '80s hidden gem, thanks to, you guessed it, Martin Short.

Martin Harvey, 'Captain Ron'

Martin Harvey, 'Captain Ron'
Disney

They really don't make movies like this anymore, do they? Martin Short did a lot of movies like Captain Ron back then, but this time, he played the straight man opposite Kurt Russell. It should come as a shock to no one that Short starred in yet another familiar favorite from our childhoods.

Eugene Proctor, 'Pure Luck'

Eugene Proctor, 'Pure Luck'
Universal Pictures

Is there a better actor when it comes to physical comedy? I think not. Casting Martin Short as the character with the worst luck imaginable was the obvious choice here. Although Pure Luck isn’t the greatest film in the world, it’s still enjoyable because of Short’s natural comedic instincts.

Clifford Daniels, 'Clifford'

Clifford Daniels, 'Clifford'
Amazon MGM Studios

Like most underappreciated comedies from the '80s and '90s, Clifford eventually became a cult classic. Though a little ridiculous, Clifford is one of Martin Short's most recognizable roles, whether or not you agree it's one of his best.

Edward Frankenstein, Nassor & Mr. Burgermeister, 'Frankenweenie'

Edward Frankenstein, Nassor & Mr. Burgermeister, 'Frankenweenie'
Disney

Martin Short played not one or two but three characters in the animated film Frankenweenie: Victor's father, Edward Frankenstein, his classmate Nassor, and the mayor, Mr. Burgermeister. Short has proved to be quite the versatile actor, having been a part of many animated children's films over the years, which is why his work on this one in particular deserves our respect.

Leonard Winstone, 'Damages'

Leonard Winstone, 'Damages'
FX

I don't think anyone ever suspected comedy icon Martin Short would be in a legal drama series. That said, his performance as attorney Leonard Winstone in season three of Damages has to be one of the best of his career, as it earned him an Emmy Award nomination in 2010.

Leprechauns, 'Schmigadoon!'

Leprechauns, 'Schmigadoon!'
Apple TV+

There's no such thing as a small role when you're dealing with Martin Short (with leprechauns being the exception). Though he only made a couple of brief appearances in Schmigadoon!, it was enough to make the series that much better. It just wouldn't be the same without him.

Ed Grimley, 'SCTV' & 'Saturday Night Live'

Ed Grimley, 'SCTV' & 'Saturday Night Live'
NBC

Fans of sketch comedy know that one of Martin Short's most notable characters is Ed Grimley from SCTV and Saturday Night Live, so I'm counting it as one of his best roles. An Ed Grimley appearance puts a smile on everyone's faces and makes a sketch that much better, I must say.
