Another whirlwind year in music is approaching a close. Many people have commented that 2016 was one of the music industry's best years in a very long time , and with new albums from major artists such as Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Drake, Frank Ocean and Bruno Mars—and world tours from equally major artists like Justin Bieber—it's difficult to disagree with that sentiment. More than most industries, music does not live in extremes. And so, within all the critical and commercials did live personal and professional despairs for some artists.
Here are 24 artists who either had the best or worst year in 2016.

Everybody misses the old Kanye. Kanye West was recently admitted and subsequently released from the hospital for "temporary psychosis." He was admitted shortly after canceling all 28 remaining shows left on his Saint Pablo tour. 2016 has no doubt been a bad one for Kanye West; from Twitter rants to more serious symptoms, all of it overshadowed his album "The Life of Pablo."

Lady Gaga's latest example of her flawless, continuous artistic reinvention is her album "Joanne," released October 21, 2016. The album is a dedication to her late aunt Joanne and filled with utter emotional honesty. Prior to her new album, Gaga gave a powerful performance of her Grammy-nominated song "'Til It Happens To You" at the Oscars alongside sexual assault survivors.

Selena Gomez actually had a great start to 2016 with a popular and well-done tour off of her latest album "Revival." But Gomez had to suddenly cancel the remainder of her tour on Aug. 30 in order to seek treatment for depression and anxiety – symptoms relating to her lupus. "Revival" is a mature and quality album, but her health took a turn for the worse, and she had to pause her life in order to take care of herself. That said, she has handled it all with extreme grace.

What a time to be alive for Aubrey Drake Graham. (I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself.) Drake released his latest album "Views" in April, then took the album on his "Summer Sixteen Tour" around the country. He also hosted "Saturday Night Live" in May, which featured him performing and successfully poking fun at himself. Drake's also still imposing himself on the sports world regularly, something that isn't likely to change in 2017.

Kid Cudi revealed on October 5 in an emotional and lengthy social media post that he was entering rehab for depression and suicidal urges. On one hand, the courage and strength it took for him to make public his personal struggles is remarkable. On the other, the pain he must have been in is heartbreaking to consider. He helped many, many people struggling like him, but on a personal level you'd almost have to assume it hasn't been a banner year for Cudi.

Future's ex, R&B singer Ciara, has been very public about how happy she is with her new husband, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson (the couple is now expecting their first child together). While Future went on tour with Drake and dropped his fourth studio album, "EVOL," back in February, he's been in the headlines more for the fallout with Ciara than for any music he's making.

Zayn Malik is free to go in whatever direction he chooses. His debut solo album (after departing from One Direction in March 2015) "Mind of Mine" solidified him as an artist and won him an American Music Award for Best New Artist of the Year. He has covered magazines all over the world, including a photo spread with model girlfriend Gigi Hadid for Vogue in August, and released a book detailing his life to this point, with a very open theme of his long-time fight against anxiety. Right now, the world is Zayn's.

Justin Bieber concluded his massively successful Purpose World Tour November 29 at the O2 Arena in London. Bieber's album "Purpose" was technically released in 2015 (Nov. 13), but it has permeated all throughout 2016. Bieber is back, grown, sorry and purposeful. He has expanded his audience and introduced his personal, adult sound to the world. He also made the Forbes Celebrity 100 in 2016, coming in at No. 26 with $56 million.

Best: Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars performed the Super Bowl halftime show for the second time in three years in February 2016. Oh, and he did that alongside Beyonce. His collaborative hit "Uptown Funk" with producer Mark Ronson ruled the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 straight weeks, tying the longest time spent atop the chart this century. His third solo studio album "24k Magic" dropped on Nov. 18 and shortly after, Mars announced a 24k Magic World Tour slated throughout 2017.

Best: Jon Bellion

Maybe you haven't heard of Jon Bellion yet, but a lot more people heard him in 2016 than ever before. Bellion released his first studio album on June 10 titled "The Human Condition." A single off of that album, "All Time Low," earned Bellion his first ever play on the radio. Bellion spent years releasing self-produced mixtapes and writing songs for other artists (such as "Monster" for Eminem and Rihanna in 2013) before releasing a full-length studio album through Capitol Records. Bellion is on tour and will open for twentyonepilots in 2017.

As previously mentioned, 20-year-old R&B artist Kehlani attempted suicide in March. She subsequently recovered and went on tour throughout the rest of the year, so here's hoping nothing but the best for her going into 2017 as well.

Worst: Robin Thicke

Ever since his marriage publicly dissolved and his biggest career hit, "Blurred Lines," lost a battle in court, Robin Thicke has all but evacuated the music scene — as far as relevance goes, at least. Thicke probably expected things to go nowhere but up after his smash 2013 hit, but the exact opposite has been the case.

Worst: Andy Grammer

If you watched the Detroit Lions play the Minnesota Vikings on Thanksgiving, you know why I think Andy Grammer's had a bad year. It's perfectly rational to think Grammer's had an alright year, but this is based on that whole what-have-you-done-for-me-lately concept. And the most recently image of Andy Grammer that America has is of him singing while awkwardly laying down on a football field at halftime.
