If the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to get a second wind, it will be provided by "The Fantastic Four: First Steps." Though the Fantastic Four are being introduced into the MCU with this film, they are clearly being positioned to be at the forefront of what is to come, even with the two "Avengers" movies on the slate. They brought in Robert Downey Jr. to play Doctor Doom, a classic Fantastic Four villain, for a reason.
Whether or not you have any investment in the MCU, all things considered it's also just nice to have good movies being released. If they have to be comic book movies because that's how the industry works, so be it. Will "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" be good? While we got a brief trailer previously, the new trailer gives us a more-substantive look at the movie.
There's a decidedly retro vibe to the look of the movie, and to the world that the Four inhabit. That makes sense given that this was the first Superhero team that Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created, doing so all the way back in 1961. It's also, notably, devoid of any ties to other Marvel movies.
We get more of a sense of what the plot will be, since we see Silver Surfer and the shadow of (and later the fashionable boots of) Galactus. Well, we're assuming those are Galactus' boots, though it would be a bit odd to walk on a planet you plan to eat. It's not like you step on your burger before you chow down. Also, we see some of the superpowers of the Fantastic Four, though Vanessa Kirby's Invisible Woman doesn't get to "invisible" so maybe they are saving that.
All previous "Fantastic Four" movies have been subpar, but maybe "First Steps" will change things. It has an interesting aesthetic, though the plot certainly feels middle-of-the-road, so that'll come down to execution.
The movie comes out July 25, making it Marvel's summer blockbuster play.
