For decades, the failure of the live-action "Super Mario Bros." movie in 1993 made Nintendo skittish about allowing their video games to be adapted. After watching this trailer, can you blame them?
Then, finally, Nintendo acquiesced. Mario and Luigi returned in 2023's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which grossed $1.363 billion worldwide. Yes, it got only decent reviews, but that's much better than the Bob Hoskins vehicle, considered an all-time bad movie. This made it feel inevitable that more Nintendo movies would arrive, especially with Hollywood's love of mining existing properties for films. As would be expected, Nintendo's next-biggest property is getting adapted. That would be "The Legend of Zelda."
Nintendo announced that Sony will be releasing a "Legend of Zelda" movie with a current release date of March 26, 2027. Yes, that means you have to wait a couple years, but fans of Link and Zelda have perhaps been waiting decades already for such a moment. There is no plot, and no cast, but there is a director. Wes Ball, who directed 2024's "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," has gotten the call.
If things hold up, we are going to be in for a reprise of the Console Wars, but on the big screen. Currently, "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" is slated to be released just one week before this Zelda film. That feels like it has to be intentional from Nintendo and Sony. This movie is also a sign that, perhaps, the wounds stemming from 1993's Mario misadventure have fully healed. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" was animated (and looked really cool, honestly), but this Zelda movie will be live-action. That makes it feel like this movie may have more of a "Lord of the Rings" vibe.
It shall be interesting to see how this shakes out. We just hope there's an ocarina involved. An ocarina of time, if at all possible.
