The year 2025 has been big for "Saturday Night Live." In celebrating the sketch comedy show's 50th anniversary, we've gotten a star-studded concert
And then a 50th anniversary special that managed to live up to the hype and the hope.
However, instead of enjoying a victory lap (or five), the world of "SNL" is expanding. No, we aren't getting a new "SNL" movie, fortunately. The track record on those is not great. After 50 years, "Saturday Night Live" is headed overseas. A British spinoff of the show is officially in the works.
Get ready to hear "Live, from London, it's Saturday Night!" The British version of "SNL" will begin airing in 2026 on Sky Max and Now TV. This will be a truly British take on the show. The cast members, the hosts, and the musical guests will all be British. One can only assume Adele will be popping up early in that show's run. Most remarkable is that Lorne Michaels is one of the executive producers. Now, maybe he's going to be only tangentially involved, but the guy continues to active produce and run "Saturday Night Live" all these years later. Will he, now an octogenarian, actually produce from across the pond? That dude just has no interest in slowing down.
It's kind of surprising that it has taken 50 years for "SNL" to get an adaptation such as this. Of course, the reality is that instead of actual spinoffs, other countries just tried to make their own "Saturday Night Live" type shows. It will be interesting to see how the British "SNL" shakes out as cast members get announced and the first host and musical guest get named. Also, shout out to all the British kids who will be 13 in 2026 and will spend the rest of their lives saying the first cast of the British "SNL" is the best ever.
