The 20 cutest meet-cutes in movie history

The Holiday has two of the sweetest meet-cutes in movie history. Amanda and Graham meet unexpectedly after Graham has a night out on the town, and Iris and Miles meet when Miles is dropping off some music at Amanda's house. Iris also has a great meet-cute with Arthur when he explains to her exactly what a meet-cute is. 

Notting Hill is an elite rom-com in every way. One of its most perfect scenes is when William and Anna meet in the bookstore, and William makes some literary recommendations. It's a swoon-worthy relationship from the start. 

Don't we all hope for a meet-cute like in How Stella Got Her Groove Back? Stella sees Winston playing volleyball on the beach, and when the two of them actually speak, there's just as much chemistry as you'd hope. 

Tom and Summer first meet at the office, but their encounter in the elevator is everything. Summer tells Tom she likes his taste in music, and he falls for her right then and there. 

Henry meeting Lucy on 50 First Dates is one of those scenes that you could watch again and again and never tire of. It's charming and funny, full of classic Adam Sandler humor. And thanks to his real friendship with Drew Barrymore, their characters have lots of chemistry. 

No one actually wants their life to be at risk because of a rogue dumpster, but if it were to end in a meet-cute with Matthew McConaughey, it wouldn't be all bad, would it? 

Natalie's meet-cute with the prime minister is so darling because it's so relatable. Hasn't everyone been flustered in the presence of someone they admire? Maybe we haven't all sworn like a sailor, but we can relate to maybe being a little awkward. 

Sleepless in Seattle's meet-cute isn't a traditional meet-cute, but when Sam and Annie finally meet in real life, it's magical. Their relationship isn't at all plausible in real life, but within the context of the movie, it's beyond adorable. 

No actor could've made Annie's first encounter with Officer Rhodes as entertaining as Kristen Wiig. Everyone thinks they can charm a cop out of giving them a ticket, but only someone like Wiig actually can. 

Meet-cutes have been happening in cinema since it began. One of the best early iterations was in Roman Holiday when Joe finds Princess Ann sleeping on a park bench and takes her back to his apartment to keep her safe. The encounter might be worrisome in today's world, but it was chivalrous and sweet back then. 

Harry and Sally have a great meet cute in When Harry Met Sally... It's so good the entire film is named after it. The two meet ahead of a road trip from Chicago to New York, and it's the beginning of a beautiful friendship. 

In Serendipity, Jonathan and Sara reach for the same pair of black gloves while shopping. It's one of those adorable meet-cutes that work out so well in the movies but would be rather awkward in real life. 

Toula is so many of us meeting someone attractive when she first meets Ian. She's his waitress, and she's so into him that she can barely speak. 

Don't we all wish we were as smooth as Hitch? When he meets Sara in a bar, he saves her from the man hitting on her by pretending to be her boyfriend. He then realizes he's met someone with just as much game. 

When Vivian meets Edward in Pretty Woman, she immediately asserts herself. She makes it clear that, even though he's got money, she's in charge of herself. Vivian is very empowered, and she impresses Edward. 

Hannah and Jacob have a great meet cute. It doesn't go well for Jacob, but it's clear the two are going to have more wonderful encounters. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have chemistry, unlike any other two actors. 

Singin' in the Rain has another fantastic early example of a meet-cute. Don hops into a car driven by Kathy, only to be accosted by her as she doesn't think he has any talent. She goes on to learn that's not the case, of course. 

In reality, meeting and subsequently falling in love with your daughter's boyfriend would be very uncomfortable, but leave it to Nancy Meyers to make it funny and charming. Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson lend to the charm, too. 

Pat and Tiffany's meet cute in Silver Linings Playbook is awkward and strange, but that's what makes it so great. Not every first encounter needs to be dreamy and magical. Sometimes, they can be gritty and real. 

You've Got Mail also has an untraditional meet cute. Joe and Kathleen, sworn enemies, meet at a cafe after unwittingly chatting with each other online. It's a great scene in a great movie.
