Former "Hockey Night in Canada" host and hockey icon Don Cherry has posted a heartbreaking message on social media ahead of the release of a new book. Hockey fans everywhere will get a chance to read some exclusive insights on the life and career of former Boston Bruins head coach and "Hockey Night in Canada" host Don Cherry. The book, which was authored by Cherry's daughter Cindy, will serve as a tribute to her life; she sadly passed away last July after a short illness. In a special message posted to his X account, Cherry indicated that her passing came right as she was finishing the book. It's been a difficult year for Cherry, who also lost his younger brother Richard at the age of 87 in March. A short excerpt from the book details more on the controversial 'you people' incident from 2020 that resulted in Cherry's termination from Rogers: The narrative that Rogers/Sportsnet and Ron (MacLean) put out to the rest of the media was that all Don had to do to keep his job was apologize and he wouldn't. This is what a lot of the corporate media shills and people on social media humped on - why didn't Don just say he's sorry and then he would have gotten back his job?To me, there was no doubt Rogers wanted dad gone, so they backed him into a corner knowing he wouldn't kneel to their demands. I believe many people knew there was more to the story about dad's firing but didn't bother looking into it and just went with the corporate narrative. The book, called "The Don Cherry Story, By His Daughter," will be released on Monday, April 21.
No NFL teams have completed a trade involving a first-round pick in the days or weeks leading up to the NFL Draft, which is practically unheard of. There is still time for that to change, and you may be surprised to hear of one player who could inspire such a move. ESPN’s Peter Schrager reported on "Get Up" Tuesday morning that both the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants have been fielding calls about their first-round picks. The Browns have the No. 2 pick and the Giants have No. 3. According to Schrager, teams that pick later in the first round are interested in potentially moving up for Travis Hunter, Abdul Carter and Ashton Jeanty. "To move up to the 2 or the 3 spot it would be for Abdul Carter, Travis Hunter or the running back Ashton Jeanty, who everyone expects to go somewhere in that 5-8 range. There have been teams making calls and those teams are not immediately slamming down the phone. "Everyone assumes it’s gonna be chalk, that this is gonna go Cam Ward, it’s gonna go Travis Hunter, it’s gonna go Abdul Carter — not so fast. I think the 2 spot gets very interesting if the Browns are listening to a 'Godfather' deal for them to trade back and for someone to trade up into the top three." Carter and Hunter are viewed by many as generational prospects. It is not a surprise to hear that teams are inquiring about what it would take to move up the board for them. What would shake things up is if a team traded up that high for Jeanty. Jeanty is by far the best running back in the draft. He rushed for an otherworldly 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns at Boise State last season. Jeanty finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting. Saquon Barkley showed last season that having an elite running back can still be valuable for an NFL team. Jeanty has already boldly predicted that he will have the same impact for whichever team drafts him. If teams are considering a move into the top five for Jeanty, they must believe him.
NHL insider Cam Robinson provided another update today on the Canucks' situation with top prospect Tom Willander. Tom Willander is one of the Canucks best prospects, having been selected 11th overall by the team in the 2023 draft. The right-handed defenseman chose an unusual development path after being draft, coming over to North America to play NCAA hockey for Boston University. He spent the last two seasons playing for BU where he put up 49 points across 77 games. Many expected him to go pro once BU's season was over, but contract talks with the Canucks stalled. The team and player seemingly remain far away from making a deal as Willander's path is now up in the air. One of his options was to return to BU next season, but that no longer appears to be on the table as he has left the school well before the semester ends to return to Sweden. However, his season is not over yet as he is now expected to join Team Sweden for the upcoming World Championship. Willander still has the option of returning to North America for the AHL playoffs, but that no longer seems likely. As such we could very well see him play in Sweden next year which could once again put his status with the Canucks up in the air. This is just another step in what is shaping up to be a messy offseason for Vancouver. It appears as though Brock Boeser will be leaving the team this summer, which could very well be another misstep from Patrick Allvin. Hopefully the Canucks can get back into the playoffs next season, regardless of what happens this summer.
