Siblings tend to have a unique bond, no matter how different they are. Whether biological, blended, or adopted, sibling love and rivalry can be quite dynamic. That's certainly the case when it comes to television. Here are our rankings of the 25 most notable siblings in television history.
We're obviously talking about the TV show here. Generally speaking, considering who their parents were and what their house looked like, Pugsley and his younger sister, Wednesday, are not far from your average American children. Yes, Wednesday does have some interesting pets and likes to play with a doll minus its head. Who doesn't?
During this series' run, there was a lot going on in the Matthews household. Sweet-turned-sarcastic sister Morgan had her moments while appearing, disappearing, and re-appearing, but Joshua was a youngen, who had a grown-up role in the sequel series, Girl Meets World. In Boy Meets World, the Matthews family generally revolved around the antics of coming-of-age Cory (Ben Savage) and his older, goofy brother Eric (Will Friedle).
Tim Allen enjoyed comedy success with three sons on Home Improvement. However, Allen's three daughters on Last Man Standing, his most recent sitcom from 2011-21, were more involved in the weekly storylines and funnier than his past male co-stars. Sarcastic tomboy Eve (Kaitlyn Dever) and the ditsy, fashion-obsessed-but-talented designer Mandy (originally and exceptionally played by Molly Ephraim) were the undisputed stars of the show.
It would have been easy for real-life identical twin sisters Tia and Tamera Mowry to simply play twins in a series. They did, but with a kicker. The two were separated at birth, adopted by different people, and don't meet until a chance encounter at a shopping mall. That's where the fun begins, and this cute show kicked off a rather impressive six-season run with book-smart Tia and boy-obsessed Tamera enjoying plenty of youthful hi-jinks.
Happy Days die-hards know there was a third Cunningham sibling, older brother Chuck. Early in the series, he went upstairs with his basketball and was never heard from or acknowledged again — one of the great mysteries of TV. However, Richie (Ron Howard) and Joanie (the late Erin Moran) were left as one of the sweetest brother-sister tandems ever to grace the tube. Richie was always there for his little sis, even though she could be a pain in the show's early days.
Both brothers are essentially introverted but have unique traits. Older bro Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) is close to his sibling and often protective while also good with a camera. However, Will (Noah Schnapp) has some character of his own and a lot going on in his own life, considering he was abducted by The Monster and possessed by The Mind Flayer. Just an average childhood.
For as well-off as the Banks family was, the children were rather down to Earth. Even Hilary (Karyn Parsons) was conceited in a charming way that still made us like her. Of course, one can argue that the funniest member of the Banks family, including cousin Will, was Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro). We know he can dance. That should be good enough.
Perhaps one of the more underrated television siblings, brothers Joe and Brian Hackett could not be more different. Joe (Tim Daly) was strait-laced and a bit stuffy. Brian (Steven Weber) was carefree and usually up for a good time. Together, the owners of Sandpiper Air combine for some good comedy, especially when dealing with their history of dysfunctional relationships and the rest of the characters on Nantucket.
These adopted sisters have not always enjoyed a stable relationship. Then again, who would when one of them is from another planet? Growing up, Alex (Chyler Leigh) often resented Kara/Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) for her special powers and abilities. As adults, however, they make quite the team when it comes to protecting the planet from other-world evil and anti-extraterrestrial prejudice.
Try to find better-looking vampire brothers in the history of television than the Salvatores. Stefan (Paul Wesley) was the good boy: kind, caring, and willing to sacrifice his life for the people he cared about. Damon (Ian Somerhalder), the bad boy, is manipulative and usually out for himself, though he eventually shows his softer side and love for his brother. Now, don't get us started on Elena.
There might not be a more dysfunctional or downright nasty set of twins than Dennis and "Sweet Dee." Dennis (Glenn Howerton) may or may not be a serial killer. In addition to being a terrible bartender, Dee (Kaitlin Olson) is an aspiring actor who is just as bad at that, and really an even worse person, especially to the customers at their bar. At least they have each other.
We'll throw Kimberly (Dana Plato) in for good measure because the Jackson boys had a good relationship with their adopted sister. However, the chemistry between brothers Willis (Todd Bridges) and Arnold (Gary Coleman), especially in the early years when they were younger, drove the show. Sadly, Bridges is the only surviving member of the three children in real life.
There are a lot of Conners to go around Lanford, and all brought something special to the table. We never really got to know Jerry. Darlene (Sara Gilbert) was the most intelligent, sarcastic, and probably maternal figure of the children. Becky (whether played by Lecy Goranson or Sarah Chalke) struggled to make the right decisions with life in general. Her family, even Darlene, did their best to be there for her.
Claire (Julie Bowen) and brother Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) are more alike than they wish to lead on. Both are insecure and fragile but usually obsess about being right and doing things the way they want something done. Claire and Mitchell each have somewhat eccentric spouses and can be overprotective of the children in their lives. Yet, their one-on-one moments range from hilarious to heartwarming.
Arguably the greatest animated family in television is led by patriarch Homer, but the children hold their own comedically. Smart aleck Bart is mischievous at its best. Sister Lisa, meanwhile, is the most grounded, intelligent, and good-natured of the clan. Finally, infant Maggie doesn't need to say a word to make us laugh.
Nothing better than two brothers getting together to hunt demons, monsters, and out-of-this-world beings. Talk about spending some quality time together. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) might be the most complex brother tandem in TV history.
Armed with a bevy of powers, these good witches use their "Power of Three" to help protect the world — or at least their neighborhood — from supernatural and evil forces. When Prue (Shannen Doherty) died, half-sister Paige (Rose McGowan) joined Piper (Holly Marie Combs) and Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) in the family business. In all they've been through, the Halliwell/Matthews girls never lose grip of the love and devotion that bonds them together.
The Bluth family, particularly the children, embodies dysfunction. Even strait-laced Michael (Jason Bateman) can sometimes get a little out of whack. Though siblings Gob (Will Arnett), Lindsay (Portia de Rossi), and Buster (Tony Hale) often drive him to the brink of insanity, his unconditional love for them is evident and admirable.
The animosity that older brother Robert (Brad Garrett) had toward younger brother Ray (Ray Romano) was comedy gold throughout the run of this widely popular series. Ray was his mother's favorite and a successful sportswriter. Robert, the everyman-like police officer, is charming in an oafish, jealous-ridden way. Together, they enjoy reveling in each other's misadventures.
Only on television can a set of three brothers and three sisters come together to form the perfect family. The Brady Bunch has been traditionally knocked for portraying an unrealistic view of the blended family, where all issues are solved in roughly 22-24 minutes. Then again, that was the point. The show was intended to be a break from reality and offer the belief that all can be right with the world.
Television's favorite twins found a way to adapt to the glamour of Beverly Hills after moving from Minnesota. At least Brandon (Jason Priestley) did. He was always there for sis Brenda (Shannen Doherty) no matter what kind of predicament she got into or whom she alienated.
While parents Steven and Elyse Keaton combined to be the rock of the family, the kids were the true source of comedy. From conservative, money-hungry Alex (Michael J. Fox) to the airhead but fashion-conscious Mallory (Justine Bateman) to the sarcastic yet charming Jennifer (Tina Yothers), the kids provided many memorable laughs on this adored 1980s sitcom. Even young Andy (Brian Bonsall) got in on the fun.
Some of the more recent siblings to take the TV world by storm are the "Big Three," and primetime viewers couldn't seem to get enough of this trio. Due to the unique format of the show, with its use of flashbacks to tell the complete story of the Pearson clan, we really got to know twins Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Kate (Chrissy Metz) and adopted brother Randall (Sterling K. Brown). The realistic depiction of the way they maneuver through all life has to offer is pretty special and will be missed after the series wrapped its six-season run in 2022.
D.J. (Candace Cameron Bure) was the brain and voice of reason. Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) was usually the comedy relief. Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) simply excelled in being cute — even as she got older. The Tanner sisters helped make Full House a massive hit with viewers, though not necessarily with critics, and the staple of ABC's TGIF lineup.
Monica's obsession with being neat and perfect, and Ross' nerdiness and social ineptness are why we love them as characters. But what makes Monica (Courteney Cox) and Ross (David Schwimmer) work well as a brother-sister team is that they understand and embrace each other's idiosyncrasies to make their sibling relationship work. Plus, they can dance!
