Val Kilmer, the celebrated actor, passed away on April 1, 2025, at the age of 65, due to complications with pneumonia. Kilmer had a long history of health issues, the most significant being his battle with throat cancer. He was diagnosed in 2014 and underwent extensive treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and a tracheostomy. While he recovered from the cancer, the treatments, particularly the tracheostomy, left him with a permanently altered voice and increased his susceptibility to respiratory infections, like pneumonia.

Underlying Causes

According to his death certificate, other underlying causes contributing to his death included acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, chronic respiratory failure, and squamous cell carcinoma of the base of the tongue. Additional contributing factors were malnutrition and a tracheocutaneous fistula. A tracheocutaneous fistula is an abnormal connection between the trachea and the skin.

Val Kilmer’s decade-long struggle with throat cancer significantly impacted his life and career. The tracheostomy made speaking difficult, and for his role in “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022), artificial intelligence was used to recreate his voice. Despite these challenges, Kilmer remained active, sharing his journey in the 2021 documentary “Val” and his memoir, “I’m Your Huckleberry.” A tracheostomy involves creating an opening in the neck to allow breathing through a tube inserted into the trachea. This bypasses the natural filtering and warming functions of the upper respiratory tract, increasing the risk of infections, such as pneumonia.

Val Kilmer’s passing serves as a poignant reminder of the long-term consequences of cancer treatment and the body’s increased susceptibility to other health issues. Val Kimer’s legacy extends beyond his iconic roles; he will also be remembered for his courage and determination in the face of serious illness.

A Note of Further Interest

Beyond his acting career, Val Kilmer was a published poet. His collection, “My Edens After Burns” (1987) offered a personal glimpse into his thoughts and experiences. Later, “Cowboy Poet Outlaw Madman: Selected Poems” (2021) showcased a broader range of his poetic work, revealing another layer of his artistic expression.
