Warner Bros. confirm new 'Gremlins' movie, other legacy sequels

When J.F. Rutherford wrote "Millions now living will never die," surely he was talking about intellectual property. The legacy sequel isn't going anywhere.

Warner Bros. CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy had a long, substantive, occasionally meandering, conversation with Deadline. During that talk, confirmation arrived on a few legacy sequels, plus a sequel of a legacy sequel. Also a remake of "The Bodyguard," but we're here to serve your '80s nostalgia needs today.

It has been known for a bit that Chris Columbus is producing a sequel to "The Goonies," a movie rivaled only by "Hook" in terms of inexplicably-popular films. Fortunately, a movie that Columbus wrote that is actually good is also getting (another) sequel. Talk of a third "Gremlins" movie first popped up in January, but this interview is the most confirmation we have gotten.

The 1984 original is a classic horror-comedy, and the 1990 sequel "Gremlins: The New Batch" is a delight. Of course, Columbus didn't work on that one, so this third film may have more of the tone of the original. While we don't know anything about cast or director, we hope Joe Dante, who directed the first two movies, gets the chance to direct this third film if he wants. He doesn't deserve to have his last movie be "Burying the Ex."

From the no-brainer department, Deadline asked about sequels to "A Minecraft Movie" and "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," to which De Luca responded, "Imminently. The ink might not be dry on the deals yet, but imminently."

So, it seems that this time it won't take over 30 years to get another "Beetlejuice" movie. If they do it swiftly enough, they can get the entire gang back together. Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis did not appear in "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" in part because as ghosts they wouldn't have aged. To that end (and spoiler alert we suppose) they'll need to move quickly to avoid the same fate with Catherine O'Hara.

And, of course, if they don't call the movie "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" then all hope is lost.
