HIM asks audiences the question, What would you sacrifice to become the greatest of all time? While you ponder that, Universal Pictures has just dropped the teaser for the movie from Oscar winner Jordan Peele and Monkeypaw Productions with Marlon Wayans, Tyriq Withers, Julia Fox, Tim Heidecker, and Jim Jefferies leading.
HIM stars former college wide-receiver Tyriq Withers as Cameron Cade, a rising-star quarterback who has devoted his life, and identity, to football. On the eve of professional football’s annual scouting Combine, Cam is attacked by an unhinged fan and suffers a potentially career-ending brain trauma.
Just when all seems lost, Cam receives a lifeline when his hero, Isaiah White, a legendary eight-time Championship quarterback and cultural megastar, offers to train Cam at Isaiah’s isolated compound that he shares with his celebrity influencer wife, Elsie White. But as Cam’s training accelerates, Isaiah’s charisma begins to curdle into something darker, sending his protégé down a disorienting rabbit hole that may cost him more than he ever bargained for.
The supporting cast includes Tim Heidecker, Jim Jefferies, Maurice Greene, Guapdad 4000, and Tierra Whack. This serves as the latter three's feature film debuts.
Justin Tipping directed and co-wrote from an acclaimed Black List screenplay by Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie. He described the horror to Vanity Fair as a sports movie "translated through a classic spaghetti Western lens."
While at CinemaCon, Withers explained, "We were intrigued about live sports with horror, something that felt memorable, unique and burrows under the skin," before adding, "You have never ever seen Marlon like this ever, ever, ever." Wayans also commented, "It’s not like Rudy … but it’s a sports movie with a twist."
On Instagram, he called his first CinemaCon "an unforgettable experience," expressing, "It was an honor to share this moment with my costar and certified partner in crime [Marlon Wayans]," and concluding with "I couldn’t have asked for a better teammate."
HIM is only in theaters on September 19.
