One of the most intriguing characters introduced in the Entertainment District arc of ‘Demon Slayer‘ is Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira. With his flamboyant personality and unique fighting style, Tengen stands out from the other Hashira within the anime.

However, what really captivates fans is his unconventional family structure, he is married to not one, but three beautiful wives. This raises many questions about the identity of these wives and what led Tengen to take three spouses. So who exactly are Tengen’s wives, and why does he have three of them?

Tengen Uzui Has Three Wives Thanks To The Clan Traditions

“God of Festivities” Tengen hails from a Shinobi clan where polygamy was traditionally practiced. In such clans located in more remote areas, the head of the family would select three compatible women for their sons to marry at age 15.

However, in this case, one of his wives, Suma, initially approached him instead of being chosen by his father. Nevertheless, Tengen grew up surrounded by the centuries-old tradition of polygamy followed by his Shinobi family, which explains why he came to have three wives rather than the standard single-spouse structure.

Tengen’s wives are named Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru. They are described as incredibly beautiful and formidable Kunoichi or female ninja warriors. During their fight against the demon siblings Daki and Gyutaro in the Entertainment District, all three wives demonstrate immense weaponry skills and mastery of various fighting techniques. While not much is known yet about their individual personalities and backgrounds, they clearly share strong bonds of love and loyalty towards their husband Tengen.

Tengen’s Approach To Polygamy Breaks The Traditional Norms

While polygamy was an accepted tradition in Tengen’s clan, he chose to defy some expectations regarding wives. Unlike the usual view of women as subordinates, Tengen sees his spouses as equal partners and treats them with utmost care, trust, and respect.

During his battles, he prioritizes the lives of his wives over the mission itself, showing his deep devotion. Similarly, Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru are powerful fighters in their own right who contribute greatly, not mere assistants relegated to domestic duties. Through his relationship with the three wives, Tengen establishes that mutual care and respect can exist even in unconventional structures.

Tengen’s unconventional family structure is both a product of his Shinobi clan’s traditions as well as his own progressive outlook. He sees his three wives Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru as equals rather than people down to him. Their dynamic continues to intrigue Demon Slayer fans worldwide.
