When you think of Superman, you picture the Man of Steel soaring through the sky, cape fluttering behind him. However, did you know Superman has a superpowered canine companion?
Krypto, a white dog with a red cape who has been part of the DC Universe since 1955. While he’s often left out of major Superman adaptations, Krypto remains a beloved figure in comic book lore. Now, James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ will finally introduce the superpowers dog.
The Superdog Krypto, is no ordinary pet. Just like Superman Krypto is also from Krypton, and was initially a test subject for one of Jor-El’s spacecraft experiments before the planet’s destruction. After an unexpected course correction, Krypto’s ship crash-landed on Earth.
He then reunited with a young Kal-El, then known as Superboy. Like Superman, Krypto gains incredible abilities under Earth’s yellow sun. He possesses super strength, speed, flight, heat vision, freeze breath, and even enhanced senses. Basically, all the powers of the Man of Steel are packed into a furry, four-legged body.
These abilities make Krypto more than just a loyal pet; he’s a superhero in his own right. However, his canine instincts sometimes lead to humorous normal dog-like moments. Over the years, Krypto has evolved from being a one-off character to a recurring presence in Superman’s world.
Krypto’s biggest spotlight yet may come in James Gunn’s upcoming ‘Superman’ movie set to release on July 11, 2025. The teaser trailer features Krypto showcasing his super speed and loyalty as he rescues David Corenswet’s Superman from a snowy wasteland.
This inclusion is no mere gimmick. Gunn has emphasized that Krypto will have a well-rounded personality and play a pivotal role in the story. At a recent press conference, Gunn explained, “His relationship with Krypto is complicated. He’s not nearly the best dog. There’s a lot more to Krypto than you see in this trailer.”
Interestingly, Krypto’s characterization in the film draws inspiration from Gunn’s own dog, Ozu. Ozu initially struggled to adapt to his new home, destroying furniture and showing signs of deep mistrust. “I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ That thought shaped Krypto’s role in the story,” Gunn shared.
Gunn shared that Ozu’s journey from a destructive, frightened animal to a “fairly often, very good boy” mirrored the arc he envisioned for Krypto. He added, “Krypto isn’t perfect, but that’s what makes him real. Just like Ozu, he has his own quirks, and those quirks are what make him special.”
