Several Disney-owned networks will shut down their standalone mobile and streaming apps on September 23, 2024. Those apps include the ABC app, DisneyNOW, the Freeform app, FXNOW and the Nat Geo TV app.
There are rumors that Disney is shutting down the apps because of plans to bring live channels to Disney Plus. However, the company hasn't confirmed that plan yet.
What does that mean for viewers? The standalone apps will no longer be available, but the content isn't going away. Each network's website will still have content available to stream, and you'll still find the live channels on live TV streaming services.
Here's the statement from ABC on the support page of its website:
"The ABC app is going away, but all your favorite shows, specials & live TV offerings are here to stay! As of September 23, 2024, the ABC app will no longer be available on mobile devices and Connected TV. Fear not! There are still plenty of ways to watch everything ABC on air, online and on demand."
Similar statements are posted on the websites for DisneyNOW, the Freeform app, FXNOW and the Nat Geo TV app.
