How to sign up for MyFree DIRECTV

Why did DIRECTV launch a free service?

In a statement about the launch of the service today, a rep for DIRECTV said that the company is looking to expand its audience beyond the users who are signed up for its premium satellite and streaming services.

“DIRECTV is excited to bring a successful history of premium content aggregation and an elevated user experience to free TV for the first time,” said Kent Rees, General Manager, MyFree DIRECTV. “The availability of MyFree DIRECTV is the building block of the future for us as we tap into an entirely new audience through this new freemium experience going beyond the traditional pay TV customer.”

Free Ad-Supported TV (FAST) services like Pluto TV and Tubi have been gaining popularity this year as streaming service costs rise and audiences look for free entertainment options. Launching a free, ad-supported service will give DIRECTV a new source of ad revenue, along with introducing new subscribers to the lineup of DIRECTV products in hopes of seeing those subscribers upgrade to paid services as their entertainment needs and budgets change.

DIRECTV will launch more affordable plans

In the press release about the new FAST service, DIRECTV shared a detail about the future of its TV services. DIRECTV is planning to launch paid plans that are "genre-based" with fewer channels at more affordable price points. The strategy sounds similar to Sling TV plans, which offer subscribers a base plan and genre-specific add-ons to create a personalized channel lineup. There is currently no word yet on when the new plans will launch.
