The Iron Bowl goes basketball as the two best teams in the country - Florida might be better right now, but don’t tell the ranking systems that - battle for the honor of being the No. 1 team on Monday.

Auburn slipped against the Gators a week earlier, but it’s right back on track after rolling through Vanderbilt. Alabama is on a seven-game winning streak with a dangerous trip to Missouri to follow.

Why Auburn Will Win

Alabama’s defense continues to be something that gets in the way of the offense being able to score more points.

That’s not quite fair. The Tide are great at defending the three and are wonderful on the defensive glass, but teams that can score in a variety of ways have no problems pumping up the points.

Auburn can score inside or out, on the move or in a half-court set, and every other way in between. Combine that with an ultra-efficient style with few mistakes and a whole lot of big defensive plays - the Tigers lead the nation in blocks - and it should hold serve just enough in a back-and-forth fight.

Why Alabama Will Win

Whatever. Alabama is going to score. It’s going to keep scoring, and it’s going to dare you to try keeping up.

It’s no coincidence that Auburn is 21-0 when allowing fewer than 83 points and 0-2 when allowing more. It helped that Duke and Florida are great, but those are also the two teams on the schedule with the most firepower.

The Tigers got Houston early in the season and Purdue in December. Those two can certainly score, but not like the Blue Devils or Gators …

Again, this might be the first of a few meetings between these two.

Ole Miss was able to tag the Tide by slowing things down a bit on an off game for the home side. That’s not happening in a crazy environment that will be frenetic from jump. Bama will win, but all it’ll do is set the tone for March 8th.
