Do Giants Disagree on Shedeur Sanders?

The New York Giants are mere days away from making the biggest decision of their offseason. With the Cleveland Browns reportedly zeroing in on Colorado receiver/corner Travis Hunter, the Giants seem poised to choose between Hunter’s quarterback, Shedeur Sanders, and Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter.

The decision isn’t an easy one, a situation complicated by Carter’s status as a blue-chip prospect compared to Sanders, the second quarterback in a mediocre class.

General manager Joe Schoen has been adamant that the team would not force a quarterback for the sake of it. Yet, the need for a franchise passer persists, and New York has no idea when it will be drafting this early again.

As such, it’s natural for opinions to vary on the team’s plans. Those high on Sanders will bank on his accuracy and his intangibles; his critics will point to modest upside due to his physical tools.

On Monday, Todd McShay hinted at the Giants potentially disagreeing about a Sanders selection.

“The coaching staff, obviously headed by Brian Daboll - the head coach, is anti taking Shedeur at No. 3,” McShay said.

New York had long been tagged as the destination for Sanders. It has long been documented that the Giants have done more work on Sanders.

That due diligence, though, doesn’t have to make New York fall in love. The allure of a top prospect that can impact the game immediately and help save jobs in the process is a strong pull, and signing quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston lessens the demand for a new passer.

"There's still a little push from the personnel department," McShay said. "...I can't say individually who it is, but apparently someone on that side -- or multiple people on that side -- are more, 'Let's really consider Shedeur at three.'"

Daboll didn’t tip his hand during offseason workouts on Monday.

“I just really appreciate our process,” Daboll said on Monday. “Having done this a long time in a variety of places, I appreciate our process, our communication, the scouts' communication, the coaches' communication.

“Once we come up with who we're taking, regardless of when that is, there is an agreement on all parties. We look forward to bringing that player, whoever that player may be, into our building and try to help develop them.”

As things stand, Carter is the favorite to hear his name called third on Thursday. Given the importance of the quarterback position and the case Sanders has made, Carter can’t feel comfortable until Commissioner Roger Goodell makes the pick official.
