LSU Baseball Coach Reacts to 'Awful Game'

LSU suffered a 13-3 defeat to Northwestern State on Tuesday night. It was a difficult home loss marred by rain delays and just an overall forgetful performance on defense by the Tigers.

After the game, LSU coach Jay Johnson said, “Not a good game, across the board. Pitching, defense, offense, coaching, the whole thing…I didn’t say much to them afterwards. It can have nothing to do with what happens this weekend…You have to develop that ability to move on and move forward but you also have to have the ability to deal with and confront failure and frustration and not let it affect how you play. We have to work past that a little bit.”

Johnson continued, “It was an awful, awful game collectively and our defense did not help it…The play was not good tonight and every facet of it was not good tonight. Three solo homers, great but outside of that, I don’t think we had three quality at-bats all night long.”

Finally, Coach Johnson was asked what he wanted players to think about after experiencing a loss as surprising as this one. He said, “It’s the world [that] we live in that unless you’re at the very top, you’re not really defined by your successes, you’re defined by how you respond to difficult things and I believe that to my very core.”

Northwestern State's record now stands at 25-17, while LSU's record has fallen to 34-8. LSU will resume play at 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday, commencing a three-game series against Tennessee at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.
