The Ottawa Charge hosted the Minnesota Frost on Tuesday, March 11, for their second-to-last matchup in the 2024-25 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season. The Charge took the victory, 3-2.
With four minutes left in the first period, the Frost headed to the box. Claire Thompson sat for interference on Mannon McMahon. The Charge immediately capitalized on their 5-on-4 chance. The Charge won the faceoff, and Jincy Roese possessed the puck at the blue line. She passed it to Tereza Vanisova, but Vanisova sent it back to Roese. She passed up to Gabby Hughes, who skated the puck up the center of the ice. She took a shot on the net, but it was blocked by Maddie Rooney. Brianne Jenner was able to pick up the rebound and tip it into the net with 15:59 on the clock. The first period came to an end with a 1-0 score in favor of the home team.
Three minutes into the second period, the Charge took a seat. Jincy Roese sat for interference, and the Frost earned their first power play of the night. The Frost couldn’t score on their first 5-on-4 chance. Emily Clark had a short-handed chance, but Rooney was able to make the save.
With 13:41 on the clock, the Charge extended their lead. Natalie Snodgrass knocked the puck out of the Frost’s possession in the Charge’s offensive zone. She sent a pass to Alexa Vasko, who took a blast of a shot that rocketed past Rooney. Vasko not only extended Ottawa’s lead, but also scored her first goal of the season.
Halfway into the third period, the Frost were able to break the ice. Sophie Jacques passed the puck to Taylor Heise. With a high shot, Heise put Minnesota up on the board. Emerance Maschmeyer suffered an injury from this goal, likely from a bad stretch, since no one touched her. She was helped off the ice by teammates and Charge staff. Gwyneth Philips stepped in to finish the game.
At 13:18, the Frost scored once more, but the goal was immediately waved off. Thompson took the shot, but Michaela Cava was behind Philips and bumped into her as the puck went into the net. Minnesota challenged, saying this was a good goal, and won the challenge. The game was now tied 2-2.
A minute later, Shiann Darkangelo took a seat for tripping. With 14 seconds left on the power play, the Charge scored a jailbreak goal. Ronja Savolainen sent a pass to the center of the ice as she was tripped up. The puck bounced into the center, where it was picked up by Vasko. Vasko skated up with no one defending her. She took a shot in front of the net and scored. She sprung Darkangelo from the box and gave the Charge the 3-2 victory.
The Charge will stay at home and host the Boston Fleet on Saturday, March 15. The Frost will head to Detroit, where they will take on the New York Sirens as part of the PWHL Takeover Tour on Sunday, March 16.
