Billy Foster, longtime caddie for Matt Fitzpatrick, is looking for a new bag as he was let go on Friday afternoon after Fitzpatrick missed the cut at The Players Championship.
“He looked at me and said it’s not working,” Foster said on Saturday, “So I just hugged him and said I understood.”
Winning the 2022 U.S. Open at The Country Club outside of Boston, was the highlight of the pairs career.
It’s been a struggle for the duo. Fitzpatrick has fallen from 43rd at the beginning of the year in the world rankings to 61st and will drop even lower once the results of this week's Players Championship are factored in.
Foster, 61, had decided at the beginning of the season to step back some from caddying and announced on Instagram that after 42 seasons it was time to job share and travel a little bit less.
Having caddied for Seve Ballesteros and Lee Westwood, Foster knows the landscape of professional golf and said he was unfazed by Fitzpatrick’s decision.
“I took a six mile walk on the beach and cleared my head,” Foster said. “I’m not sure of what’s next.”
Foster took to Instagram to announce the split and titled the post Goodbye Pal, It was an incredible journey.
“Well, after six great years, all good things come to an end. This game never stops to frustrate you & infuriate you….!!! Unfortunately, times change & ultimately, it’s the caddie or the coach that has to accept results are not good enough & when you stop enjoying what you are doing it’s time for a change. Thanks Matt, we had a great run & who knows where the next chapter will go. Onwards & Upwards”
Foster was supposed to be on Fitzpatrick’s bag for the Masters but is now a free agent.
According to the old looper, he’s open to an intriguing player, either as he said someone up the world rankings or some new kid that could benefit from his expertise.
“Or, I could go to LIV,” Foster said with a smile.
