The Claret Jug is one of the most coveted prizes in major championship golf, so when one goes on sale, the antiquities world shakes.
When winning the Open Championship, the winner not only earns the title Champion Golfer of the Year but also the Claret Jug, which is part of the honor that goes with the title of the champion of the oldest golf championship in the world.
Then, when next year’s Open is held, the Jug is returned for the next winner, but the winner is allowed to purchase replicas that are currently 50% of the size of the original for themselves and a select few, like caddie or agent.
The most recent sale of a replica jug came on Sunday. It was John Daly’s jug from his 1995 Open playoff win over Italian Costantino Rocca at the Old Course in St. Andrews.

The Claret Jug was first awarded at Prestwick in 1872 to Scotland’s Young Tom Morris, his fourth consecutive Open victory with a three-stroke win over fellow countryman Davie Strath.
The original jug is 20 ¾ inches high, 5 ½ inches at its widest, has a base diameter of 7 ¼ inches, weighs approximately 5 12 pounds, and is made of 92.5% sterling silver.
The Daly jug sold for $392,181.60 to an unknown buyer, measured 12 ¼ inches tall and was accompanied by a traveling case.
According to Golden Age Auctions, where the Jug was sold, Daly sold the trophy in 2015 to an individual who eventually consigned it for auction.
The Daly Claret Jug is the 11th Jug auctioned by Golden Age.
In July, Gary Player’s official large (90% scale) 1974 Claret Jug was auctioned and sold for $481,068.00.
Previously, when a player won the Open Championship, they kept the jug for the year and then returned it. Eventually, the R&A allowed players to purchase a single jug for each victory at 90% of scale.
Over time, the R&A has reduced its size to 50%.
In total, the 11 Claret Jugs, including Jugs from Greg Norman, Tony Jacklin, Ben Curtis, Player, and Daly, have combined for over $1,440,578 in sales.
