Ryder Cup Points in Play Again at Sony

The race for the six Ryder Cup spots on the USA team started again last week at the Sony Open.

Over the next seven months, Americans will earn weekly points on the PGA Tour toward one of the automatic six Ryder Cup spots.

In 2024, players could earn points only in the four majors, with most of the points available in 2025.

In 2025, the system works with one point earned by $1,000 for all players making the cut in PGA Tour events from Sony through the BMW Championship.

For majors, the multiple increases to 1.5 points per $1,000.

Last week, the most points were lost in the playoff between two foreign players, Canadian Nick Taylor and Columbian Nico Echavarria.

Of American that finished highest on Sunday in Oahu, J.J. Spaun earned the most points at Sony with 513,300 and moved from 67th on the Ryder Cup rankings to 30th.

The following five players were Eric Cole (356,700) and four who earned 283,838: Keegan Bradley, Patrick Fishburn, Adam Schenk, and Jackson Suber.

The move by Bradley put him 16th on the rankings at 1,092,996, and 1,135,217 points from catching Wyndham Clark in sixth.

Bradley, the U.S. Ryder Cup Captain, wants to play on his team at Bethpage, where he would be the first playing captain since 1963 when Arnold Palmer had the distinction in Atlanta.

“I'm still on my mission to be the best player that I can be, one of the best players in the world; I haven't won a major in almost 15 years. I really want to contend in majors, that's number one on my list,” Bradley said prior to the Sony last week. “I've won three years in a row. I'd like to make those four years in a row. But I really want to be looked at as one of the best players in the world. Me being the Ryder Cup captain doesn't have anything to do with that.”

Cole, Fishburn, Schenk, and Suber, of the players that earned the most points at Sony, are in this week’s American Express in Palm Springs and are joined by the leader in the rankings, Xander Schauffele, with both Brian Harman and Clark, who are in the top six.

With a purse of $8.8 million and the winner’s check of $1,584 million, an American winner can significantly move up the ranking this week.
