Scottie Scheffler had a Chance

Scottie Scheffler is the number one player in the world.

He’s been in that position since a runner-up finish in the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club and no one has come close to dethroning him.

In 2024, the University of Texas Longhorns won seven times, including a second Master's Green Jacket, leaving no doubt who is the best player in the world.

When Scheffler won the Tour Championship on the first day of September last year, the belief was that he was not only playing like Tiger or Jack but also a scary proposition when his name popped on any leaderboard.

Its seven months later and Scheffler’s last win was 232 days ago in Atlanta, and since then, the top player in the world has been close but has come up short in his eight tournaments of 2025.

Which validates what the 28-year-old did in Sunday’s final round of the Heritage.

After opening with a bogey on the first hole, Scheffler recorded four birdies on the next 11 holes and was in the mix to successfully defend his title.

The drive on the par-5 15th floated right, leaving Scheffler with a three-iron from the sandy waste area.

It was a tough shot to get to the green, but Scheffler was trying to win, and an eagle would have given him a good chance.

When the ball landed in the water short left of the green, Scheffler put a pin in his balloon and would eventually double bogey the hole and then bogey the 17th before a pat on the back birdie on the 18th.

The one-under-70 finish was his 26th under-par round in 2025 and the T8, his fifth top 10 finish.

“I did some good things,” Scheffler said on Sunday after a disappointing round. “I just needed a few more shots out there, which were definitely there for the taking for me. I just didn't quite take advantage of them.”

Scheffler now takes a much-deserved week off before likely playing at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson in his backyard of Dallas, then The Truist and the PGA Championship.

“I think I'm really close,” Scheffler said. “I feel like I did a lot of things well this week, just a few of the important shots I just didn't pull off. Outside of that it was a pretty solid week.”
