TGL Payout, not an Equal Playing Field

With the inaugural season of TGL in the books that included an exciting victory by the Atlanta Golf Club, it would be worthwhile to learn how much money each player made for their involvement.

The total purse was $21 million for the whole season, and the standings were determined after the playoff, from the winner to sixth place.

The Atlanta Golf Club winner received $9 million for the win, and New York Golf Club was runner-up at $4.5 million.

The rest of the teams: Los Angeles, $2.25 million; Bay Club, $2 million; Jupiter, $1.75 million; and Boston, last at $1.5 million.

Under the TGL rules, not each player shares equally in the purse. Instead, according to the TGL, they have a payout based on participation.

So, in the case of the Atlanta team, Patrick Cantlay, Billy Horschel, and Justin Thomas each played in seven matches and earned $2,625 million, with the fourth member of the team, Lucas Glover, earning $750,000 for playing in only two matches.

How you played in the matches did not matter when making a payout; it was just how many matches you played in.

It's unclear who determined which player played in which matches, so it's hard to determine why, in the case of the Boston team, Hideki Matsuyama played in only two matches and earned a total of $200,000 while Keegan Bradley and Rory McIlroy won $500,000.

It is possible that Glover or Matsuyama didn’t want to play more than they did, which would explain why they received less than the others in their respective teams.

Oddly, LIV teams are mandated to share any team money equally after providing sixty percent back to the team and then take the remaining forty percent and break it up into up equally into four pieces.

The breakdown numbers provided in this story are unofficial but representative of TGL's intention.
