12 West Coast small towns you should visit

The West Coast is the best coast, in my (very biased) opinion. But if you need convincing, I highly recommend you check out its adorable and scenic small towns. Here are 12 you must visit from the Canadian border to Southern California.

Leavenworth, Washington

You’ve likely seen Leavenworth on multiple lists for European-lookalike villages in the US. It is the closest you’ll get to Germany without needing a passport. In the winter, enjoy snow sports, Christmas Markets, and spas. In the summer, hike and camp in the nearby Enchantments, and in the fall, attend Oktoberfest.

Just 25 miles from the Canadian border, this university town is popular with young people, international visitors, and outdoor lovers. You can hike in the nearby mountains, relax on Lake Whatcom or Padden, or hop around the multiple breweries and cafe hoppers.

Astoria, Oregon

Astoria is a lovely stop on any Oregon coast road trip. Take a ride on the historic trolley, visit the Lewis and Clark National Park, and then grab lunch at one of the delicious restaurants in town. If you’d like to extend your visit, enjoy the ocean at the Clatsop Spit or take a hike on a nearby trail.

San Luis Obispo, California

The NorCal and SoCal rivalry may be famous, but savvy people know the Central Coast is the best part of the Golden State. And San Luis Obispo (or SLO) makes a great base. Wander the quaint college town, shop a bit, eat and drink a lot and then head to the nearby Morro Bay, Pismo Beach, or dog-friendly Fisherman’s Beach.

Anacortes, Washington

This jumping-off point to the San Juan Islands is worth a visit on its own. Enjoy a sunset (or sunrise) over Mt. Erie, whale watch, kayak, and hike — all without leaving the mainland! There are also plenty of antique and booking shopping and cafes in town to keep you busy for an afternoon.

Of course, if you do make the ferry ride, San Juan Islands’ biggest town is waiting to welcome you. A cute port with wonderful restaurants and adorable Victorian homes, Friday Harbour makes a great place to explore the islands' nature.

Bend, Oregon

Popular with skiers, hikes, mountain bikers, and any other outdoor activity, this central Oregon town is a great place to escape. After a day of exercise in nature, relax in the Old Mill District along the river. And since this is Oregon, rest assured there are plenty of waterfalls within reach.

Poulsbo, Washington

Also known as “Little Norway,” Poulsbo is situated across the Sound from Seattle on the Kitsap Peninsula. Explore the numerous galleries, hike in the state park, visit the Alpaca Farm or just stroll along the Waterfront. Don’t forget to visit the OG Town & Country grocery store (formerly Central Market.)

Ojai, California

One of California’s best-kept secrets is located in the Ojai Valley. The town of the same name is the perfect weekend getaway. You can ride horses with views of wineries, kayak on Lake Casitas, go wine tasting, relax at a spa, or play golf and tennis, all in a few square miles!

Port Townsend, Washington

The cutest town on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. Sleep in an old Victorians-style B&B, stroll the weekend farmer’s market, visit Fort Warden, or just relax on the beach. Take the ferry to Whidbey Island to extend your trip!

Eureka, California

Cruise into town among towering Redwoods in this far north Californian town, which feels like it should be in the Pacific Northwest. Stroll the historic old town, shop at the farmer’s market, and then head out for more exploring in the Redwood Forest or up north for less-crowded coastal beaches.

Monterey, California

Another Central Californian gem, Monterey is an amazing destination. Enjoy world-famous seafood, then bike or walk along the seaside recreation trail. You might get lucky and spot sea lions!
