22 destinations to escape the cold this winter

If you’re going to fly away from frigid temps, you might as well make a big trip of it. The Northern Hemisphere winter is summer down south, making it the perfect time of the year to road-trip around New Zealand. Hike one of the Great Walks, explore Rotorua’s geothermal activity, learn to surf, or just enjoy not defrosting the car every morning!

It cools down in the desert, but it is nowhere near as cold as a lot of the country. Even in January and February, you can lie by the pool in Palm Springs or go hiking in the beautiful surroundings. Don’t miss the trails at the top of the aerial tramway!

Winter averages in Merida still fall in the 60s to 80s, which is perfect for exploring. The city was a bustling Mayan center, and many ruins can still be seen today. It’s popular with digital nomads and is great if you want to sneak some remote work in.

Winter is the dry season in much of Vietnam and is particularly a good time to visit the south of the country. The temperatures will be friendlier, and less humid, and minimal rainfall. It’s a great time to relax on the beach or take boat tours around the islands.

South Florida can be unbearably hot and sticky for most of the year. However, wintertime means temperatures in a reasonable range of 60s and 70s, great for shorts, but you won’t be sweating uncomfortably the entire time.

This southern hemisphere city is perfect for a winter getaway. The days will be gloriously long thanks to peak summer hours, and you can enjoy all the unique neighborhoods Cape Town has to offer. If you have additional time, make sure to visit nearby wineries, hike Table Mountains, and hit the beach!

The Galapagos have a pleasant climate year-round without much fluctuation in temperatures. This means even in winter, you can enjoy a cruise around Darwin’s playground and marvel at blue-footed boobies, giant tortoises, penguins, and more!

If bougie beach towns call to you, Bali should be on your list to visit this winter. The pleasant weather, great beaches, and international community make it a fantastic destination from January to March.

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing the pyramids or wandering the temples in Aswan and Luxor, winter is the best time. You won’t roast (as much) under the Egyptian sun, and it’ll actually be pleasant to explore the ancient world. 

Rio is the party capital of the southern hemisphere and that means it’ll be summer when temps up north aren’t as friendly. Additionally, if you visit in late February to early March, you’ll be able to experience one of the best Carnivals in South America!

Unfortunately, Europe is one continent that doesn’t have a tropical climate. However, the Canary Islands off Spain’s coast make for a great place to escape winter. You might not be swimming in January, but you’ll be able to go out without a jacket most days and still enjoy the beach.

The desert is calling this winter season! In fact many consider this the better time of year to visit as summer can be too hot in Marrakech. You’ll be able to more comfortably wander the medina and suntan on a rooftop, without sweating through your shirt after just ten minutes.

You don’t need to break out your passport to escape the cold; just fly south, within US borders. Charleston’s famous humidity is more bearable in the winter, so you’ll be able to wander the historic streets and sip sweet tea without melting.

Another passport-less warm weather destination, Puerto Rico is fantastic in winter. Lounge on the beach while enjoying cocktails or go fishing or try your hand at learning to surf!

Melbourne isn’t as well-known for beaches as Sydney, but that’s because it’s more of a city escape. Relax in Australia’s best coffee shops, sample drinks at some of the best bars in the world, or go shopping. All amongst much friendlier temps, without the heat and humidity of northern Australia.

If you like golf, then you’re probably aware of the appeal of Scottsdale. However, even if spending a day at the range isn’t your thing, there’s still plenty to love about Arizona winters. Go hiking, horseback riding, wine tasting, or just get some vitamin D by the pool!

Belize makes for a great Caribbean destination for those looking to have a warmer winter. Short flights connect it to many US hubs, the main languages are English and Spanish, and there’s little-to-no time change.

Move over, Cancun. Mexico has a new favorite beach destination for those looking to fly south. Tulum has been built up over the past decades and is now a haven for vacationers. Beach clubs dot the coast, short-term apartment rentals are plentiful, and nearby cenotes (swim holes) are ready to welcome you.

Another desert favorite, Vegas isn’t just for those who like to try their luck. You can hike the Red Rocks, hit up a pool party, or dine outdoors in January or February.

Northwest of Santiago, this coastal city is perfect for visitors who want to add beach time to their Chilean escape. Colorful streets, sandy shores, and great food can all be found in Valparaiso. 

Savannah is the heart of the romantic South and a great place to visit when the temps back home are chillier than you'd prefer. Go on a ghost tour, sip sweet tea, or shop the numerous unique boutiques in town.
