The best fishing destinations around the world

The River Delta is unique in that fishermen have many different options for where to cast a line. There’s the river, of course, but also marshes, swamps, lakes, and small bays, depending on the type of fish you want to catch. You’ll mainly see catfish, bass, red bulls, and crawfish. Keep an eye out for gators!

This island province up north is the perfect place for easy day fishing trips. Base yourself in Eastern Passage (20 minutes away from Halifax) and enjoy small-town coastal vibes between trips out on the boat. Alternatively, you can go up to Cape Breton for salmon and eel.

Fly fishing is very popular in Ushuaia, Argentina, otherwise known as the end of the world (this is where cruises for Antarctica depart from). Go out with a guide for the day and catch nice-sized trout.

If you’ve ever had salmon in Europe, it probably came from Scotland. If you fancy trying to bring home your own, your best bet is the River Tweed, which is just a short drive from Edinburgh. The area is a hotbed for salmon fishing and has one of the longest seasons in the UK, lasting from February through November.

The northern islands of the country are a great destination for fishermen on vacation. You’ll have access to waters full of cod, pollock, and halibut in one of the most scenic destinations in Europe.

Perhaps you want a bit more of a tropical getaway for your fishing vacation. No problem, head down to the Bahamas for fantastic reef and deep-sea fishing. Plenty of charter companies can take you out for an ideal day in Caribbean waters.

Homer has one of the largest derbies in the West. Every March, the town hosts the Winter King Fishing Tournament, where the first prize goes to the largest fish. If that’s not your thing, you can charter a boat or even go whale watching, depending on the time of year.

The Keys aren’t just for suntanning on the beach; they’re also a great place to cast a line. The tropical varieties like tuna, mahi-mahi, and barracudas are unlike what you’ll find in the rest of the continental US.

If you’ve ever dreamt of an adventure getaway somewhere warm, look no further than the Amazon. You can go on multi-day excursions or a day and catch interesting species like bicuda, piranhas, and peacock bass.

Puget Sound salmon are famous throughout the country, whether you’re partial to King, Sockeye, or Coho. There’s also plenty of lingcod and Dungeness crab to be caught.

Another stunning destination in the Caribbean, the Turneffe Atoll has plenty of great guides who would love to take you out. Amongst the bright blue waters, you’ll find bonefish, permit, and tarpon.

The Cape is named for a fish for a good reason — there are plenty to go around! Depending on the time of year, saltwater and freshwater varieties are available. You can expect to see flounder, bass, tuna, mackerel, trout, perch, pollock, and more!

Off-shore fishing in Iztapa is world-class. Experienced guides can take you out and line tuna, blue and black marlin, and sailfish.

Between Nanaimo and Port Hardy on Vancouver Island’s eastern shore, Campbell River is a fisherman’s paradise. Depending on the season, you can catch many types of salmon, lingcod, and halibut. 

Iceland is such an amazing destination, and you’ll have plenty of fishing spots to choose from on your trip. There’s salmon in the Ranga River and catfish and cod in the Atlantic.

Lake Baikal is a premiere ice fishing destination just north of the Mongolian border. However, it’s recommended you go with a guide unless you’re an experienced fisherman in frozen conditions.

Off of India’s east coast, this fantastic fishing destination is actually closer to southeastern Asia than the subcontinent. You can expect to catch various marlin, tuna, and dorado.

This little fishing town is in southeastern Alaska, not far from the border with British Columbia. Plenty of charters are just waiting to take you out, or if you’ve brought your own gear, you can cast a line solo — just make sure to purchase a license beforehand.

Cabo is a hotbed of tropical fish activity, and plenty of boats will be happy to give you the experience for a day. Additionally, you can usually go whale watching every year between December and April.
