The 15 strangest Halloween candies

There's just something so unsettling that happens when you turn gummy worms an opaque brown color and call them "gummy maggots." Perhaps unsurprisingly, these gross treats have been discontinued, though there is still a listing for them on Amazon.

There is, apparently, a pretty big market for gross-out candy. Back in 2009, Think Geek introduced a line of candies including both sour liquid candy blood and, um, sour liquid candy pee. Though Think Geek discontinued the product, the candy is still available for purchase right here.

If you've spent as much time as we have in the gift shops of science museums, you've likely seen these suckers before. Featuring a variety of edible insects, from ants to scorpions to crickets and even tequila worms, these lollipops are some of the most eye-catching and unique candies out there. For those of you looking for a bit more anatomical accuracy in your Halloween candy, try and track down this discontinued delicacy. After chowing down on the "meat" of the fish, you can throw the skeletal scraps to your cat... or enjoy them yourself. We won't judge.

If you've always wanted to go all Mortal Kombat and chow down on a (relatively) anatomically correct heart but don't want to go through all that cumbersome "murder" stuff, Candy Warehouse has you covered. Bandages are great for healing surface cuts and wounds, but what about injuries that run slightly deeper? The kind that can only be cured by a wonderfully creamy confection made from the cocoa bean? This is pretty brilliant. Salsagheti is a sour straw-like confection that comes in a plastic tray, with a packet of sauce meant to be poured atop the gummy spaghetti strands before they are eaten. You're unlikely to come across this candy, however, unless you're trick-or-treating in Mexico. That said, if you're looking for some, you can import it through Amazon.

Somehow, this is grosser than the candy pee. The Hose Nose is a mask filled with liquid candy slime. You strap it onto your face, uncork the nose and let the candy drip onto your tongue. Ewwwww. If you want one of your own, it'll only set you back a couple bucks (and your dignity).

From our friends across the pond comes this combination that is certain to go down alongside peanut butter and chocolate, strawberries and cream, and Captain & Tennille as one of the best duos of all time: Shrimps and Bananas. Before you start dry-heaving, though, be comforted by the fact that the shrimps aren't shrimp-flavored — they're apparently raspberry-flavored. Presumably the bananas are banana-flavored, but you'll have to buy your own pack to find out.

Every so often, when you pop open a bag of gummy worms, you'll find one that, due to either a manufacturing error or some candy mad science, has been fused to another, creating a candy-Siamese-worm-twin. Haribo saw these manufacturing errors as opportunities and then proceeded to roll out a line of gummy candies that are exclusively full of these twin candies.

These spicy lollipops are a go-to for people looking to give out a trick with their treats. Hot Pops are fairly common (at least more common in America than Shrimps and Bananas), so if you see their telltale rectangular shape and striped red color, prepare yourself for an intense sweet-spicy flavor, and maybe grab yourself a glass of milk to wash it down. Oh, so Hot Pops aren't enough for you? You want something to hand out to that kid you're pretty sure TP'ed your tree last year on mischief night? Well, we've got something for you. Anyone who's been to Chipotle knows that the combination of salt and lemon is perfect for coating potato chips, but the madmen over at Pop Rocks extended that to the realm of candy. Unfortunately, this product seems to have been discontinued, but our Google-fu was strong enough to locate an online store where you can try this salty-sour candy for yourself.

OK, this is pretty clever. By simply changing the color of normal gummy worms, they are instantly transformed into a candy oddity. There's also something about that band in the middle that's just... unsettling. Does this remind you of when you dissected an earthworm in high school biology? No? Just me? Well then. Sure, these are more common in Christmas stockings than in the pillowcases of trick-or-treaters, but that doesn't change the fact that it's super weird that here in America, candy dispensers modeled after pooping animals, monsters and even dinosaurs are inexplicably popular. Can anybody explain this tradition? Because to us, it seems kind of crappy.
