The first week of the 2025 season saw multiple stars make up for lost time in the spring and start rehab assignments. Three notable players, including Brayan Bello & Zach Neto, started their own assignments on April 1. Not to mention, there were other injury news on the day, including a setback for Sean Manaea.
Brayan Bello began the 2025 season on the IL. However, he’s on the way back, as the right-hander made a rehab start with Worcester (AAA) which marked his first start of the year. Bello struck out five but also conceded four hits and two walks. He gave up four runs against Jacksonville (which I’ll get to in a minute).
He threw 2.1 IP (47 pitches).
Bello averaged 96.2 MPH on his two-seamer and 95.8 on the four-seamer, falling roughly in line with where he was in 2024. Last season, the average velocity was 95.7 MPH on the two-seamer. Also notable was the fact he threw his four-seamer 9%, continuing the trend of him using it more often.
The Red Sox pitcher ditched the four-seamer in the first half last year, focusing on just three pitches. However, he used it roughly 9% of the time over the second half, giving him that extra dimension to work all quadrants. His numbers (3.47 ERA, 68 K over 72.2 IP) after the All-Star break were much better.
Also in Jacksonville, Marlins pitcher Edward Cabrera made his 2025 season bow. Cabrera tossed three innings (46 pitches) for the Jumbo Shrimp, striking out four.
Cabrera touched 98 MPH in his start but sat more in the 95-96 MPH range.
The Marlins pitcher is on the IL with a right middle finger blister injury.
Angels shortstop Zach Neto started his rehab assignment tonight with Salt Lake (AAA). He went 1-5 in his first five at-bats.
Neto started the year on the IL thanks to shoulder surgery. However, the team was happy with his recovery in the spring and thought his absence wouldn’t be a long one.
However, Neto did not play the field in this game. The Angels infielder started as the Bees’ DH.
Braves catcher Sean Murphy went 1-4 for Gwinnett (AAA) on his rehab assignment. His lone hit was a home run.
Murphy started the year on the IL with a rib injury, which opened the door for Drake Baldwin to make the Braves’ roster.
JT Brubaker (Yankees) and Cristian Javier (Astros) were both moved to the 60-day IL.
Sean Manaea (Mets) got a PRP injection and won’t throw for at least two weeks, delaying his timeline into later in the season. The Mets placed him on the IL after he was shut down due to an oblique injury.
